DIS 3.1 V6 Idle Tuning

Hey everyone,

Working on my DIS swapped 3.1 V6 camaro and just got the data logging issue fixed as can be seen in the DIY-Prom section. Now on to the actual tuning portion of it. Background of the car:

3.1 V6 Iron Head
3.4 Intake manifold
LT-1 Injectors (24lb/hr I believe)
DIS swap
Using MAP sensor
Running $A1 code

Everything else is stock. Looking at getting some advice for dialing in the Idle on it. It smells rich but the sensors say everything is running good. After about 5 seconds, it doesn't want to run any more unless the throttle is opened. The IAC doesn't seem to be doing much and looking at the live data the INT and BLM don't seem to be moving around. I don't have the knock sensor hooked up so I am not sure if that would cause anything. I have attached the log file in CSV and XDL as well as the .bin I am using.

Thanks,

Drew

Not having the knock sensor connected can retard timing without any knock actually happening.

So get that connected and that should solve your issue of the engine not wanting to run.

The $A1 mask is one that requires the idle learn procedure done. Here is a decent thread that describes how to do it:

Re: DIS 3.1 V6 Idle Tuning

Sorry for the delayed response. I got busy with work stuff. Any ways I added in the knock sensor and was working on the car again today and did some partial throttle logging with the car not moving (needs some more work for it to drive). I have attached the log but it seems at partial throttle the car gets rich after holding it at 10 percent idle. Would you guys know where I need to start with this?

Thanks

Re: DIS 3.1 V6 Idle Tuning

So doing more digging today I want to think that the IAC isn't working correctly. In the log it says it is moving but I don't think it is. Is there a way to check this? When the key is initially turned on, I can hear it clicking but it kind of sounds like it is stuck. I think if I get this issue figured out, the rest will come fairly easily. I believe I have another IAC I can try out but I am not sure if it is being caught up in the manifold or not.

Thanks,

Drew

Re: DIS 3.1 V6 Idle Tuning

So I have still been trying to figure out this issue. I am using a stock $A1 bin so I am not sure why things aren't working. While working on it I realized that the IAC wires are flipped on A1 compared to the stock camaro v6 wiring so I changed that and it still didn't want to idle. I tried messing around with the IAC steps at startup vs coolant temp but that didn't seem to make a change either. I think once I can get the thing idling, I can figure out the rich running issue.

Does anyone reccomend anything I can try? I can't try the idle relearn procedure since the car stalls and dies right away.

I have also attached a Log I was able to get while using the throttle to help keep the car running. Does anyone see anything out of the ordinary?

Thanks,

Drew

Lose the 24lb injectors and install the 17's. There's no need for the larger injectors.

I don't think the injectors are the problem in this case. I found where to adjust the flowrate in the .bin so I changed it and it helped with the rich condition but it still doesn't idle. I have noticed that the fwd 92 3.1 use a different throttle boy and IAC valve so I am wondering if that might be the issue.

Thanks,
Drew

Re: DIS 3.1 V6 Idle Tuning

So I stopped at the junk yard and picked up a throttle body from a 91-92 grandprix 3.1. wired it up to the car yesterday and tried it out today. Starts right up and idles great.

Moral of the story:
If you are switching to a newer ecm; ie 91 and up, you can not use throttle body (primarily IAC) from an older ecm 89 I think and below. So if you are having problems with the car, make sure the hardware is compatible with software.
