Cold air intake

Fellas,

I have an 89 Firebird. Any recommendations for cold air intakes? I haven’t found any, even for trans ams! Only ones that exist are the do it yourself kits. Are those the best way to go, or are there cheaper alternatives to overpriced tubing?

Thanks,
1989Jack

Re: Cold air intake

This cost me about $50.00 to do on an old beater, had it leading to the factory air box, albeit modified. An Open Element filter with added tubing might run you an extra fifty, so I agree, you're looking at a tad over one hundred if you do it yourself...

Re: Cold air intake

I dumped my whimpy air box and tiny snorkel by picking up a dual snorkel at a pull a part yard from a 5.7L thirdgen. This is the kind that goes over the radiator. You will need to make sure you get the plastic cover around the hood latch that they attach to and that holds the air filters. The only mod on installation was to get an exhaust pipe reducer to connect between the snorkel outlet and the intake plenum inlet. You will need some high density foam sealant tape to wrap the pipe where it join the fittings and black RTV. The snorkel has a port for the air temp sensor so you have to extend the wires to reach it. I was able to put in two of the square K&N air filters. I can post pics if you are interested, I just don't have them handy right now...
