1984 2.8L mechanical fuel pump line question

Want to take out my camaro that has sat for 20 years for a drive around the block but it’s not picking up fuel from tank. I want to cut the fuel pick up line and route it into a jerry cab for a red neck fix. (i’m swapping an engine in so i don’t mind doing things the dumb way). It’s a 1984 2.8L mechanic fuel pump. I wanna cut the pick up line that sends it to the carb and hook a hose up to it into the jerry can and probably just leave the return line. I’m just not sure which is which, there’s 2 steel lines that go into rubber fuel lines going into the pump. One is larger and one is smaller, one goes into the side it feels like and the other feels like it goes into the bottom into a metal fitting. Does anyone know which one is the pick up and which is the return.
