Sensor Problem (intake)

i scrapped the coffee can that houses the filter and i use the top of it to bolt it down and top acts as free air top
so its got only one problem now
the sensor i disconnected keeps making the Service Engine light appear in the dash
WTF? im so frustrated !!if its not one thing its another with this car! its got PMS , again i think..
well im tired of driving with that stupid orange light on in my face all the time its irritating
gimme some ideas to kill the sensor or something to make it think its still hooked up

1.3 rebuilt RS SC

Don't get mad at the car! After all it was you who caused the SES ligth to coem on. Now how to fix the problem...

Tap a hole in the intake ducting and screw it in there and the light should go a way after clearing it.

BTW: The ECM uses that sensor to figure out intake air temp/speed. It needs it in order to properly adjust fuel delivery.

hook the sensor back up. the computer needs the info to make the engine run correctly. If you have to, with your current setup, poke a hole in the air filter & stick the sensor in, tape around the edges to keep dirt & dust from bypassing the filter.

After you have done that, and the light still appears, disconnect the battery cables for a few moments, go have a soda, etc, reconnect battery, go for drive. Should stay off, then.
These cars are EASY to work on, electronics are "old" and previous owner and new owner abused.
Sensors end up failing, or need to "learn" your new trick.

Just take the MAT (manifold air temp) sensor out of the old filter box, connect it to the harness, and lay it near the new air filter. It doesn't have to read the temp of the exact same air getting into the filter, as long as it knows intake air temp, it's good. Don't put the sensor by the engine; it'll read HOT engine air instead of the air by your filter.

Well if reefin on it does not turn it out, your could go buy a new
one and tap the hole in the new airway you made. But if you
don't want to waste the $20 (thats what I think they run) you
can get a hacksaw, cut it out, and do what TomP said put it somewheres close to the air intake, as long as it is plugged in
and away from the engine you should be fine. and Good-bye SES light.

Oh yeah WD-40 is usually good for something a little stuck, I recommend a better rust cutter for this if you still want to get it out.

The sensor in the air filter canister is the IAT/MAT, another option than poking a hole anywhere would be to do the resistor mod that the TBI, and TPI guys do. The sensor performs the same function and a proper resistor will trick the computer that its still there, then just tape it up and wire tye it off out of the way. FWIW the same sensor is used on just about every GM vehical with a 60* V6 so they're easy to find in the u pull it yards.

I had to wrench the hell out of mine in order to get it out. I also used wd-40, but didn't seem to work well. I put the can in a vise so it wouldn't move when I tried to turn it.

Removing the MAF screen is a 50/50 shot. Some people hsave done it with no adverse results. Others did it and got the SES light and a bad idle. I refrained from doing it myself because I didnt want to buy a new sensor if it didn't work
