New coil for my 2.8

Last summer I rebuilt my ignition autolite plugs auto zone type wires, blue streak cap and rotar. With all this I noticed A LOT better gas mileage and better performance. The coil is still stock and looking very old, its the same one that came on the car from the factory in 1986... If I drop an MSD coil in will this help performace or just make the engine run smother, I wanted to get a higher voltage coil but I am afraid I will melt the wires.
Sugestions????
Thanks
David

you will not melt wires, that's what headers are for. get a better ignition module to with the new coil to get the most out of it.

When I didn't have an MSD ignition (6AL box & Blaster SS coil), I was running the Accel external HEI coil. I noticed a power improvement at higher rpm's, so it'll help a bit.

You can nab a set of Accel 8mm wires from http://www.northernautoparts.com (I think you have to call the phone # for the part #) for about $20. Aren't the Autolite wires 7.5 mm?

On my set up, I use Accel everything.
Except I use a GM coil on distributor shaft & AC Delco modular.
I use Bosch Platinum (not the 4 tips)
I use Accel 8.8 plug wires
and a Accel coil for the proper bracket.
I choose to remote mount them. I have this one on a simple L bracket, suspended from the firewall overhang.
The car sings.
Definetly go for a new Accel coil, very nice surprise improvement.
It's subtle.

Jack the rear off your car up and near the rear end is the power conection for the fuel pump. It will be the only wire conection in the area. Unplug it. Lower car and start or try to start engine. If it starts wait for it to die. When you are done changing the filter reconect the wire..

Kragen sold me mine for $36.
Get the part number (forget mine) shop around for the part.
Make sure they can get it, tho.
Sure you can mount the proper Accel coil in the stock spot.
I choose not to.
Lousy location.
