You might not want to mount it upside down... some blaster coils (don't know if the GM one qualifies) have oil inside to cool the windings. Altho, I think it would say so on the packaging. I know the normal Blaster/Blaster2/Blaster 3 are oil cooled.

DONT! install that coil upside down, it is indeed oil filled to cool it, you turn it upside down that coil wont last you very long, especially if you do a lot of driving.

I tried to mount it on the firewall . After I decided , I had just invented to many new curse words , I took a chance and mounted it upside down .lol . Then Graeme informed me that it is oil cooled .Im ganna drive it like that tomorrow b/c I dont have anymore time to fart around with it today , but Im ganna fix it fri .
This thing is a **** to mount b/c of not having enough room to work .But I think I have figured out how to mount it on the firewall , Im going to get the flexshaft that dremel makes and try it again .

Oh come on.
Really?
Don't mount them upside down?
Where was this information obtained from?
I've had mine upside down for about 6 months.
No ill effects.
I also mounted a coil behind the distributor.
BUT, that coil was one that was desinged to be mounted that way.
Wayne, I made an "L" Bracket, drilled into the rain water over hang, attached "L" bracket, hung it so the coil wire attaches upside down.

Yeah , I looked for some Aluminum today at Home Depot (remembered Karl telling me to get some thick aluminum and make an L shape) , they didn't have any thick enough . Right now I have it on some "L" shaped brackets hanging upside down . Man , I tell you ,there are three things I don't see how people can not have when they work on a car . 1. Craftsman tools ! 2.Dremel 3.Vise .......*** I LOVE my Craftsman tools !

Wayne, check out some L brackets at a Home Depot.
Look for premade, items, that are to wide.
Slice down middle.
Kinda what I did.
MSD website.
Ok I seek this out.
Sounds really far fetched.
Coil is a sealed unit.
But, I do enjoy learning new things.

Home Depot carries steel strip stock... I've made many brackets out of that. (I hate making brackets.) I usually use the 1/8" thick stuff, bend the crap out of it using a hammer and my vise, and use a hacksaw if necessary. If it's a complicated bracket, I'll make a template out of thin aluminum first, to make sure everything bolts up correctly. The aluminum's easy to cut with snips, bends easily (in case you need a certain angle), and you don't even need to drill holes, just use a centerpunch and hammer, and you've got holes. It also saves you from running back and forth between the car and the work bench!

Then you get to paint the bracket the color of your choice! Make sure you give it a light scuff sand first, to remove the protective coating from that strip stock (it'll come off easy), and prime it, let the primer dry; when it's dry, wipe it off with a paper towel to get rid of dust, then shoot it again, then sand it LIGHTLY with 320 grit paper, then shoot your color coats.

It takes a while, and it's a pain in the ***, but it'll look sharp when you're done.

Oh and about the MSD coils, yeah they're sealed, but the oil won't cover all of the windings if you mount it upside down. So 3/4 of the windings are cooled, the other 1/4 aren't.

Oh; er, you probably know it by some other name, like a scribe or punch or awl- it's the thing you hit with a hammer to put an indendation in something (steel or wood), so your drill bit doesn't "wander" all over the place, it starts biting in the "center" of wherever you want it to.

Yeah , I did that , thats how it is mounted now , but hanging upside down , tomorrow I am remounting it , I dont have enough room on that side with the wires and all the crapola in the way .I might still drill through the top on the other side , not sure yet .It looks real good where I have it now , but the upside down thing , i just dont think its ganna last with being oil cooled .I dont have to drive my car to far tomorrow so Im not worried . Im drivng it about 8 miles to the shop for my speedo gear to get fixed , their not charging me b/c they said " he should have done that when he re-built the tranny " .Tomorrow I will remount the coil . Next project which wont be until Nov or at the end of the summer is a MSD 6A box I have to recover from this tranny rebuild and shiftkit first .I love this shiftkit though , I hope my future wife one day can buck me this hard in bed !

Well , i just got finished a few min ago re-mounting my MSD coil .I mounted on the left side of the distributor about a half inch away from the distributor .I had to take the distributor cap off to get my right angle dremel drill attachment down in there , that gave me a chance to get a good look at my cap and rotor .The metal part on the rotor has got some rust on it , and the plastic around it is chewed up and my cap is getting chewed up .Yeah , I think its about time for a new one huh ? lol .I should be getting my accel cap and rotor next wed .Oh , this is how I mounted my coil ; I took some L shaped brackets and mounted them in the firewall , I mounted the coil the same angle the other one was mounted ,I used the screws for the mounting it in the old crappy area and put them threw the bracket then threw the steel around the steel coil bracket , then out the other bracket , and put the nuts on them . But before I mounted the brackets , I put them in my vice and cut part of the aluminum off the brackets so they would not touch the coil .( cut using my dremel)I wasn't sure how sturdy it would be before I did this but, I thought , what the hell , Im ganna try it anyway . It's pretty damn sturdy .I was surprised when I tried to move it with my hand and it barley moved . It even looks pretty damn sharp where I put it . I know , its nothing fancy like Tom has , but Im happy . I passed on doing all of that b/c its really hard to paint down here with all the humidity and its been real windy lately .Tomorrow I will take the old coil off using my dremel to cut it out .I'm hoping it will really clean up this areau by the valve cover ..... I also need to re-make my coil to cap wire , its like way to long now ! Hey Tom , go read the "Hey Wayne" thread about the code scanners we ordered .I left ya a message bud .

Wayne, attack the FOUR RIVETS holding the factory coil to the bracket. You'll have an easier time doing the job that way.
PS, the coil is dead.
BE sure to destroy coil. Meaning it may come off in pieces! Try to leave the bracket intact.
It is a structural piece.

Karl , Thanx .Yeah , thats what I was looking at earlier was those rivets , looks like I can prabably cut them with my dremel .Man , I can't belive how lose it is in the bracket . I can jiggle it around a little bit in the bracket , it even squeeks a little , whats up with that ? lol Man , it feels so good to have done that and know it looks good ! It looked good the "Karl way" upside down .But I knew I was not going to have a problem doing that . I was worried about drilling into the firewall and having to re-mount the coil back in the same old crappy place . Just out of curiosity Karl , you said structural piece , does that mean its holding something else together ?

Hi Wayne.
In my instance, my bracket holds up the egr solenoid.
I left it intact, "incase".
It's just way easier to work around that rear plug area minus the factory coil.
My Firebirds' Accel is still upside down.
I'm leaving it.
If it dies, I'll get a new one free, anyway.
I kinda doubt it'll die. Racers have their coils in all sorts of places
Even their MSD boxes, mounted upside down/sideways.
I really doubt I'll have any problems. I ran my Accel coil for over 100,000 miles (mounted sideways) pulled it off of that truck, used it on my Firebird for 10,000 miles more.
Now it resides back on the truck it's been on since 1990! And still works great!

Well , I removed the old coil yesterday . It looks better without it there , cleaner .You can't really look at it and tell something else use to be there either b/c their is something on both sides of the bracket that holds things up .I also took my coil to cap wire off and cut it b/c it was way too long for the new location of the coil . It looks kinda funny now b/c the wire is ONLY about 1 AND 1/2 INCHES LONG !!! Looks really good though . Yesterday I received my Accel cap and rotor in the mail .I ordered it on the 7th , but the order was not filled until the next day , so they sent it to me using 2 day shipping for free !!!! I love doing business with those people .When I ordered my heatshield for my plugwire the same thing happened ! I plan on changing my cap and rotor over my springbreak in a few weeks . My ignition set-up is really looking nice with the custom made accel wires I made , my coil relocated .

Wayne, doesn't the blaster coil go on the passenger side, aside the valve cover? That is where I mounted mine. Right inplace of the factory coil. The hard parts of the install were the rivits holding in the factory one. I used the MSD wiring harness too when I put it in. This was one of the few things I actually installed myself. I dont think I will do any of that anymore. My hands were so badly cut, but I completed it 4 hours later that was including the 6A ignition.

Yeah , it is made to be mounted in that place . I didn't want to buy that coil particularly ; but I didnt know how long my old coil was going to last . At the time I was thinking , if I break down , I can pull over on the side of the road and swap it in there . I don't like the area the stock coil ( and MSD stock replacment is meant to be mounted ) .Its to much heat from the motor and vibration there .So when I had time to mount it , I mounted on the left side of the distributor on the firewall . ( looking from front of the car )

Where did I hear that location suggestion
Does work out kinda well, in the end, does't it?
When ya do the cap, ONE WIRE TRANSFER AT A TIME.
Just roll/flip the cap over, transer rotor, place new cap on the car. Start switching wires.
If you screw up, you cannot start the car.
I know.
I screwed up once.
Never again!

KED85 <--- where I heard the location suggestion Thanx Karl ! But before you said something , I was not sure if I liked the spot because of the vibration .

If I ever get my digital camera working , I'll have to snap a pic !
