Is This My Cat?
Is This My Cat?
I was driving along today and when i stopped at a stop light my car died out of nowhere, after i started it back up it ran fine for a few seconds and the just started sputtering really bad and kept wanting to die unless i would tap the gas and keep it above 1500RPM, if i let it die then start it again and try to rev it the RPM's would stick at 3000 and sit there till i turned the car off, then after i turned the car off after trying to get it to stay running the cat would just start billowing out white smoke while black smoke was coming out of my tailpipes. So me and my girlfriends dad towed it back to his house to look it over but when we got it there and let it run for like 10 minutes straight it wouldnt die for nothin, so thinking it was just a stuck injector or somethin i go and buy a bottle of gumout to run through it, 15 minutes after i put the gumout in and drive it around it starts sputting and dieing again, smoke and all. Finally we thought the cat was clogged or something so i went to Jegs.com and overnighted a new one. The cat on there right now i'm pretty sure is still the stock cat. My girlfriends dad works for GM and he says they start to sputter out around 180,000 miles and my car has 176,--- miles. I'M TOTALLY STUMPED!! Does anybody have an idea???? TIA

Not to scare you or anything but its blowing white smoke and black smoke out. So I'm thinking that the motor is about to take a **** and die. Has it given you any codes? My other guess would be that the car had overheated and blown a head gasket that would explain the white smoke if you could smell anti freeze coming from the ehaust pipe.
actually the white smoke was coming out of the converter, and black smoke coming out of the tailpipes meaning it wasnt burning all the fuel or it was getting to much to burn cause puddle's starting forming around the tailpipes after we ran it for awhile, and no there's no antifreeze smell. TomP?? Ked?? what's yall's opinions on this matter? The injectors, spark plugs, egr, valve's???

Ok. I'd say its a stuck injector. The black smoke would be a rich condition and since you say theres a puddle forming its defantly gotta be a stuck injector. But before you do anything lets hear from the others

how are you getting 2 different colored smoke trails? does the new cat-ylitic convertor have a hole in it?
Black smoke out tail pipe- not burning all fuel
White smoke billowing out tail pipe- blown head gasket
Blue smoke on start up- valve seals
Blue smoke while running warm- rings
White wisps while running- too much oil in pan
as for thepic by fiream: well, maybe $hitty kitty needed some "my time"

You are deffinetly getting to much fuel. The white smoke from the cat is it over heating, becuase the unsed fuel is buring in there instead of the engine. Over time this can kill... err cause the cat to cloge up by melting the honycomb in side. Do you get any codes? have you pulled your plugs and looked at them yet? What is there condition?
you seem to be on the money BitchinRS, the white smoke was coming from the convertor but i replaced it with a Dynomax superflow convertor from jegs yesterday. I went and priced some injectors and jegs has the set of 8 Accel injectors for around $230 and carparts.com wants almost $80 a piece for the Borg Warner injectors!?!?!? WTF?! I think i know which ones i'm gonna get, i kinda see a good side to this whole thing happening though, cause if it wouldnt have i would have not replaced my convertor or cap & rotor, and spark plugs for awhile, i just needed a second opinion on if it was actually my injectors before i went and spent the $230 on 'em. Should i buy the 19lb injectors or the 24lb injectors?? Thanks for all the help fella's

My converter smoked like crazy when I was resetting my timing after removing my distributor and it did the same thing when it was running waaayyy to rich. I don't know much about injectors, but would think that 19lb might be to much fuel, and would put you in same spot your in now IMO.
What I did was grab 6 injectors from a scrap yard for $7 each and sent them to cruzzin performance and had them cleaned, flow tested and blue printed. All for the same price 1 brand new injector would cost.
