Backfire from somewhere but don't know where, Newbie here, Help me

Ok I have a 85 Camaro 2.8. I put another engine in it, Everything hooked up good and stuff. I go to start it, Starts good and idles fine, Right beneath the mass air flow sensor I put my hand and I rev my car and it bangs on my hand like smacks it and makes like a bang backfire noise, What is this? I took off my hoses from my air filter and eliminated the MAF, But where the hose hooks on to the throttle body from the air filters u can hear it coming out of there, We are chaning that piece tomorrow, We're thinking throttle position sensor or something in that piece, Also, we're thinking it could be out of time, It's at 17 degrees but it's supposed to be anywhere from 11-13. Thanks for the help u guys

Defantly the timing, thats where I would start. I have mine set at 13 degrees. The best way to get the distrubitor bolt loose is with a swivel, 2 long extension bars and a 15 mm socket. You can get a swivel from wally world for like 5 bux.huuummm that name sounds familiar

Hey, CamaroRules85, you should really get together with 85CamaroRulz. He lives 12 minutes away from you, and amazingly enough, has the same EXACT problem! He just put a new engine in, too. What's more, he thinks it's the timing, too! And believe it or not, he ALSO thinks that the timing's at 17 degrees! Isn't that strange? (laughs) The world is full of coincidences, eh?

See his message below:

I changed it, It isn't my MAF. It knocks on ur hand right below where the Mass Air Flow Sensor is. So tomorrow we're checking out the part that has the throttle sensor on it. It's a whole piece. While I am at it, I am probably gonna get new plugs and wires. But we can't get the distributor bolt loosened. 9/16 is too small and 5/8 is too big, We're thinking it's metric, We even used that L shaped wrench, Didn't work, Email me at Heckman_R@msn.com.

Yeah that was lame. Your name is almost the same too. His car is out of time too its at 17* I think lol. Anyway.

Now check vacuum leaks. About what RPM range does it backfire on? When my car did this it backfired from about 1500-2000 which really sucked but in all other ranges of the engine it was fine.

Maybe the timing was increased as it went faster down the drag strip.
IF you drive, backwards, on the same drag strip, the problem will be corrected.
Oh, pushing the car, sideways, down same drag strip, that caused the timing problem, increases the horsepower, as long as the wind factor is calculated into the final gear ratio formula.

Let us know the results!

Please keep us updated.

We hang on every response from ya.
