best street tires?

I have a 92rs that is getting an engine swap. The combo will produce about 350rwhp with an additional 150 shot of the gas. I have spohn weld in sfc's, wonderbar, front and rear sway bars, eibach sportline springs and bilstein shocks and struts.

My question is, what are the best stret tires that you guys have run? The car is not a daily driver, nor does it see any track time, but I would like it to handle like a racecar. Price is not the object because the car is driven only 20 miles a week and is never driven in the rain. I want to retain the stock 8x16 rs rims. I don't just want strait line performance either, I looooooooove the curves!!!!! front and rears don't have to be the same.

Thanks in advance

The best all around tires I ran on my 89 IROC were Pirelli P-Zero Nero. (245/50-16) Unfortunatly they don't make this size anymore, but if you run a different size, they're worth checking out. Now I'm running Kuhmo Supra (712) in 255/50-16 size. I think they're good handling but not the greatest for straight line. I would have tried the F1's if they weren't so expensive.

yeah I like the F1's too and I will probably drop the coin to get them, but the goodrich g-force T/A's seem nice too. I would just go with drag slicks in the rear but I want the car to stick like hell on the twisties too.

The F1's, from what I've heard, handle extremely well.

If you can afford it, they'll serve you very well. Very nice tire.

Have you ever driven on them? I know they wear fairly fast, but I put somewhere around 20 miles a week on my car, 100 at the most, so that is not an issue.

The Goodyear Eagle GS-D3's are an amazing tire for the street. I've been running them on my car for the last year and a half and tread wear seems pretty good. I love the curves too, and these tires STICK. I used to have BFG KDW's, and with those I would get on the gas coming out of a turn and slide the rear of the car. With the GS-D3's I can nail the gas and the car grips and shoots out of the turn fast. They are also an excellent rain tire.

I have BFGoodrich Comp T/A's all around and I am very happy. They were on the car when I bought it over 2 years ago and still got lots of tread and let me hook up really nice.

Thanks I just wanted to hear fromsomeone who actually has them on their third gen to make sure that it wasn't all hype and was worth the cash.

Drag radials probably wouldn't takea corner really well because of a softer side wall right?

Car: '89 Trans Am GTA

I was living in Houston when I needed tires for my GTA, & a lot of the guys on the local F-body list just raved about the Firehawk SZ 50s, so I bit the bullet & got a set.

BEST MOD I've EVER done.

I don't know what kind of conditions you drive in, but their wet traction is very good, & has saved me from wrinkled sheetmetal twice. (I have 245s on the front, & 255s on the back.) Also, my car is like yours - basically a low-mileage "weekend warrior".

Best suggestion I can give you is to look at the ratings (on tirerack.com) of each tire you're considering, & go from there. Also, see if the local dealer will maybe match internet prices - mine did, & I wound up getting each tire for right about 25% off! (Which is like getting one of the tires for free!!)

Good luck!

I'm gonna get some new hoops very soon, so naturally I've been checking the forums for the best tyres. I see nothing but good things about the F1 GS-D3's also. So I get a price and they were....... £217 (or $393) !!!!!!! Dont know what you people are payin for them, but.......this price is savage?!
I believe they were designed in Euroland, but we sure got the **** end of the stick when it comes to buyin em ?!

I think that tirerack had them for $155 but my local dealer said $235 a piece!!!! That was without road hazard.

V8Rumble: My car is never driven in the rain, unless it catches me by surprise, so I'm basically looking for dry traction. You know, as close to a legal road track slick as possible.

Car: projects.......
Never had the F1's on my car, but they were on a buddies 98 Cobra vert when he got it. I couldn't make that car hook at gainsville after they laid fresh VHT right before I ran, and the car only ran low 14's. 2.39 60' was the best I managed, same car/everything went 2.10 on nt555 nittos.
- After that I saw no reason to put them on anything. They might work for handling with the proper suspension, but IMO they were just too soft. They'd get loose cornering or launching and you could pull over and see the rubber rolled back into the tread.
just my $.02

Wow I dont think anyone is goin to spend the dough on these and go in a straight line?! Of course they are for handling. I'm certainly gonna throw it round some bends if I sell an organ and get some.

yeah, its nice to race from light to light but my goal here is to have a car that is glued in the curves. I mean it will only see the track once or twice and I do have an identical set of rims for the car. I could always put some M/T's on the extra rears if I really want to drag.

Re: best street tires?

I was looking for a good recommendation on street tires, and saw this thread. So instead of making a new thread I'll just resurrect this one.

I recently installed Nitto 275-60/15 drag radials out back. Mainly for the traction, tall size and oldschool muscle look. Now, this car is a daily driver and I realize these tires aren't the best for autocross style driving, but that isn't going to stop me from pushing the curves (curves not turns).

What I am looking for, is a superior set of street tires for the front that will allow me safe passage in the rain and grip well enough to regain control of the car in the event that the rear breaks loose.

I am stuck with a 15" rim size, so unfortunately I cannot sport the F1's. What would you guys recommend?
