Tire question
Tire question
Right now I'm running 245/60/r15 goodyear gt+4 tires on the back of my camaro, I can break them loose pretty easily (usually spins thru first if I get on it at all).
I found a set of 245/50/r16s BFG comp T/A drag radials on 16x9.5 corvette rims for $350.00 (price includes 4 wheels and tires).
I was wondering how much better the drag radials would hook than what I'm running now, (assuming both sets of tires are about 90%)?
does the fact that they are both 245's mean they are going to perform about the same?

Re: Tire question
The 245 is (mm) if I'm not mistaken. Although brands can vary slightly from what I've read, technically they should be the same from what you have to what you're considering.
The fact that your going from a 60 series (taller sidewall) to a shorter 50 series sidewall would technically give a little less grip, but I'd doubt you'd notice.
Going from a general all around tire to a purpose built drag radial tire will be drastic. You'll notice a big difference. Keep in mind you'll have terrible traction in the rain, and you'll wear 'em out a lot faster too.
You sure the vetter wheels are 16x9.5? That seems wide.

Re: Tire question
245s are awfully narrow for a 9.5 rim. You could easily put 295/315s on a 9.5 rim.
I have 285s on a 9" rim now & they are in the recommended range.
Something tells me, those are not 9.5s.

Re: Tire question
with what he said about 245's being too narrow on that rim, the tire itself is barely 9 1/2". The 50 series tire would be about 2" smaller in overall diameter so you would be a little quicker and it would lower ur car 1", your speedo would be off and you'll loose some top speed. Later.----------
Oops, I mean 1" smaller overall. Didn't notice ur goin from 15" to 16". Later.

Re: Tire question
ya, the wheels are off of an 85 vette, and from what I've read the base model that year came w/ 16x8.5's and the z51 came w/ 16x9.5's.......is there any way to tell w/ the tire on the rim?

Re: Tire question
I just talked to the guy whose selling the wheels, he said said they came of a base model vette......so I'm guessing they are really 8.5's. So I'll probably just keep my stock rims and buy some new tires.
I'm pretty sure my rims I have now are 8'', has anyone here put 275/60R15 drag radials on an 8 in rim before?
