widest tire?

So my trans am has a rear end from a camaro ss 2002. The tires stick out about 3 inches each side. If anyone has a similiar setup, whats the widest? Thanks!

Re: widest tire?

holy crap! if the tire is 3" outside the car, im sure you could fit a 335 without any wheel well work. It will look like total hell, but it will probably fit

Re: widest tire?

the car isnt close by. I cant remember if it was 3 inches each side or 3inches total. If it stuck out 1 1/2 each side what would be the widest?

Re: widest tire?

well it does really depend on what width wheel you use and how far its actually stick out

not to hijack, but. i have 89 stock iroc 15 inch wheels. right now i have 255 60 15 bf comp t/a. i like the beefy and very wide look, however- my application calls for r compounds. is any one running r888 or Ao48? id even consider RT-615 .what size is the largest/widest i could fit?

Re: widest tire?

first your 4th gen rear is wider than a 3rd gen. so if you pu your stock wheels on a fourth gen rear it will hang out the fenders. you can safely run a 285 on the rear. but you need wheels with te corect ofset from a 98 or up fourth gen

Re: widest tire?

Try a set of wheels from a 4th gen they should fit perfectly! That will be the type of offset you need....

Re: widest tire?

At this point the only thing you can do is swap back to the 3rd gen rear end, swap the LSD and gears over be sure to use 89-92 axles(28-spline) the rear ends are 2" different in length.

I have 315s on 11" wheels and they are almost 1/2" in & not sticking out. And I'm not the only one here. The wheels determine where the tires end up, regardless of the rear end width.

Post up a pic of you tires "sticking out 3 inches".

Even with the GTA rear rear (not front wheels on the rear) they should end up flush with the outer fender lip & not stick out.

There is a difference between SITTING out & STICKING out. I suspect that your definition of "sticking out" is different than what most people would call it.

Here's mine.....

And here is a Camaro with a 4th gen rear end & stock rear offset 16" 3rd gen wheels (the same as your GTA wheels).....

4th gen rear in a 3rd gen retaining the stock 3rd gen wheels look funny out back especially from behind,if you like it like that by all means go for it.

Why does it "look funny out back especially from behind"? Does the blue Camaro I posted above, look funny?

Re: widest tire?

My back spacing is off a little but I don't have a problem with it. Those are 295/50r15s in the rear on a 8in. wheel.

Re: widest tire?

I think there's a problem with that blue camaro and a HUGE problem with the red one! The blue one I'd be okay with if the rim were 10 or 10.5 inches wide so the wheel well was completely full. it looks strange having "skinny" tires being pushed out that far. Ronusmcmma, your camaro is otherwise beautiful, but don't those rear tires slam your fender when you launch?

Re: widest tire?

The blue Camaro really fits the "wide track" Pontiac slogan though, huh?

I just recently realized that Pontiac's "Wider is Better" campaign might've been responsible for Pontiac picking up a lot of female buyers around that time. hehe

Re: widest tire?

When I finally do decide to replace the wheels on my car I will have the correct back spacing. I made a mistake with my first try at wheel fitment. No the rear tires don't bottom out at any time because Im running a set of independently controlled rear air shocks rated up to 1000 pounds . There made for towing or caring heavy loades. There's very little give to them.

Re: widest tire?

OK, decided to fix the rear backspacing on my car. Been looking at these wheels in a 15in. by 8in. rear with a 5.5 backspacing to compliment a 295/50r15 tire. They offer the same for the front but with a 4.0 backspacing. What do you think?
I need to fix this=

I wouldn't go THAT deep. I like 0 offset wheels. In other words...Center of the wheel being the tire mounting surface.

I ran 17" x 9" 5" bs front & rear with zero clearance issues. For a 8" wheel, I'd go 4.5"bs (4" is the center of where the tire seats, the .5" comes from the rim lip).

Need more info (on the tire size AND wheel to be 100% certain) but yes...A 295 width tire can fit very easily under a 3rd gen fender.

Re: widest tire?

I'll looking to run 315/45/16 on a 10.5 rim, I'm assuming with those aboved mentioned offsets no mini tubs are needed?

What are the stock 3rd gen offsets?

Re: widest tire?

Our front 16x8" 0mm offset front rims would have 4.25" of backspacing.

The rear 16" x 8" 16mm positive offset rims (16mm/25.4 = 0.63") have about 4.9" of backspacing

Where are you going to find a tire that size?

Hey Jim! I don't see that size existing on Tire Rack. Also, that would be a 27" diameter tire. I'm thinking about going with a 27" tire also, but I wanted to make sure you take overall diameter into account when selecting a size. What style rims were you gonna run?

I'm gonna get 16 inch rims like my stock ones, widen them to 10-11 inch in width. It looks like 11 would be better.... a few years down the road.
