17in Wheel size on 86 TA?
17in Wheel size on 86 TA?
Can anyone tell me if 17X8 with 4.750 backspacing and a +6mm offset will work on my 86 TA front and back? What size tire would be best? I want to order them today and I want to be sure I'm getting the right size. Thanks

245/45/17 is stock diamteter, and will fit.
the wheels will fit, 4.5" of BS would be better, but 4.75 will still work.

I have 17" x 9", 0 offset Snypers. Sorta..... I HAD that front & rear, but fit 11"s in the back now.
Your wheels are 1" narrower but have the 6mm difference in offset. That is just under 1/4" so.........(i hate conversion crap!
)....You essentially have 4.75" bs.
In other words...They should bolt straight up with zero problems. In fact, even better than mine (which had zero problems, btw), since they would sitting a 1/4" further out.
Anybody wanna double check my math?

Re: 17in Wheel size on 86 TA?
Personally, I'd go wider to start with. Why go up in diameter, yet no wider in width, over a stock 16" x 8"?
But I digress......
If you like the FWD-looking offset of Vette & 4th gen wheels? Go with 4.75".
If you prefer the deeper dishes like a real RWD car should (IMHO) have...Go with the 4.5".
Which wheels you looking at?

we are talking about a while 1/4" here, they will both look fine. 4.5 will put the wheels out the exta 1/4" and put them in, IMHO, the ideal spot.
Re: 17in Wheel size on 86 TA?
How about a 17X8 with 4.50 BS and 0mm offset with the same 245/45/17 tires? I love the look of these rims! I think they will have a nice deep dish look. This is a Torq thrust "M"

Re: 17in Wheel size on 86 TA?
When I first put my 17" x 9", 0 bs ROH Synpers all around on my 87 GTA....I had 275s up front, 285s back & nothing rubbed.
Now I'm very lowered (adjustable height, so no fixed 1.5"/2"/2.5"....whatever) & still don't rub the wheels.

Re: 17in Wheel size on 86 TA?
With the 4.5BS the wheels would still be inside the wheel well right? I mean they wouldn't be sticking out past the lip at the top correct? I'm gonna price the 275's and may go up to the 9in wide. I'm going with the "M" for sure though.
Re: 17in Wheel size on 86 TA?
I'm going to stick with the 17X8's with the 4.5 back spacing. What about going to a 255/45/17 instead of a 245? Would that work on the car and with an 8in wide wheel?

yes, a 8" wheel will not be outside the fender lips at that width. If you go 9", the BS needs to be adjusted
