Firehawk Indy 500's????

I'm thinking about getting a set of firehawk tires for my 86 T/A. Does anyone have any opinions about them? Currently I have 215/65/15 on 15x7 rims. I'd like to put some 235/60/15 on them? This shouldn't be a problem should it?? Does anyone know why some came factory with 215/65's and some came with 235/60's??? Thanks.

Re: Firehawk Indy 500's????

my 84 camaro has 235/60s on the front and 255/60s on the rear, both on stock wheels. also run indy 500s, they're a good tire.

I worked for Bridgeston/Firestone for about 5 years..and had some Indy 500's on my 86 Z28, theyre a decent tire, not a real performance tire though. I got decent mileage out of them and they did okay for me in the rain. I just put a set on my toyota truck....i think those tires are discontinued though

Re: Firehawk Indy 500's????

I've run them on the front of an '89 Camaro RS LO3, in size 245/50R16. They were okay for grandpa, they didn't do anything spooky when driven sanely, but they're not great. For the front of these cars, they are better than BFG Radial T/As, which seem to prefer non-strut suspensions.
I suggest that if budget grip means more to you than looks, switch to Falken Ziex ZE-512 tires in a 225/60R15 size. They're the best 15s I've ever tried on the front of a third gen.

No, they are not discontinued. And I wouldn't suggest them. Go with the wide oval indy 500's.

Since when do they offer those in a 235/60R15 or anything close? I can't find any such on tirerack.com or Firestone's website

Re: Firehawk Indy 500's????

I would personally try to upgrade the rims to 16x8's and get some Wide Ovals. Mine aren't the 500's, but they've reviewed pretty good at Tire Rack and on some of the Corvette forums I've come across. Wet weather traction is said to be good too but I haven't pushed it when it's wet. Otherwise I've noticed a vast improvement in handling.

If you're considering a tire, Google the tire name with the word "reviews" and you may find some forums discussing whatever it is you're thinking of getting.

Here's some comparisons with the Wide Oval I have:

Re: Firehawk Indy 500's????

i have the wide ovals on my 92, they are a pretty nice tire so far. Not a serious performance tire by any stretch, but work quite well on the street. so far they are really quiet too

you can't get wideovals for under 16" wheels, theres a new tire out called the wide oval indy 500, but i have yet to install any of them yet so i can't say how good they are. as for the falkens, let me know how long they last you. we see them come back worn out in less than 30,000 miles, they also develop edge wear very quickly.

Admittedly mine didn't make it 30,000 miles, but I had no problems with edge wear. But considering the surprising grip, the amazing response, and the good ride, plus no feeling soft when in mid-corner, and being good in the wet, even when driving aggressively, they're a great summer tire.
I agree with the other person, try to get the 16x8 wheels if you can.
You can get new 17x9" steel Cragar wheels from Summit or Jegs, for about $77 per wheel, and they fit great. Fit them with 255/45R17s for best response, or 275/40R17s if you believe my enemy's claims.

I've been looking at tires for two days now! The Firestone Firehawk Wide ovals look to be a good tire for the money. I've been running BFG Comp T/A's ZR for some time. 245/50ZR/16 front and 255/50ZR/16 in the rear. Can't seem to find any 255/50/16's from any Manufacturer Seems most performance tires are not kept in stock. Have to wait 2-3 days.

Got my Firestone Indy 500 Wide Ovals 245/50/16's yesterday. The local Firestone shop matched Tire racks price! Ran them up to 100 mph felt very stable, they seem to ride a little better than the BFGs. No rain in the future, will have to wait to try them out.
