22inch irocs

I was thinking about putting 22 inch irocs on my sportcoupe. Any helpful tips on having to lift my car? Does any body have any 4 sale?

Re: 22inch irocs

My advice is don't do it.It's more pain than it's worth,it'll screw with ride and handling, not to mention the ill effects on braking and acceleration.More mass means more weight to stop and start. In my opinion the look is horrid. If you want something that looks good,go for something 17 inch to 18 inch,19 is pushing it but can look good depending on wheel choice. The weight of a larger wheel tire combo is still a factor but not near as extreme as 22.Depending on the road conditions where you live, super low profile tires will get you in trouble too.Hit a large pothole with the rubberband lke low profie tires often associated with 22 inch wheels and those expensive wheels get bent in a hurry.Just my opinion,it's your car though so do what you like, just trying to give you a few things to think about before you spend a ton of your hard earned cash.

Re: 22inch irocs

The bigger the wheel the faster front end componants wear out and with 22 thay will go really fast so be prepaired for a much higher cost of maintenance.

Re: 22inch irocs

Please reconsider. IMHO, 18's are about as large as one should go.

You're not likely to get a lot of "helpful" info here - Most of us, myself included, do NOT advise going bigger than 18" on these cars.

Re: 22inch irocs

For irocs the highest i would go would be 20's and they look nice. Here are some pics with 20s on and his tires are 255/35/20 and didnt need to lift it instead i think he dropped it.

Re: 22inch irocs

20s are old news project. Stock v6 camaros come with 20s now. If you want to stand out in the car show crowd(especially in the south) you gotta go big. Big wheels, stereos, motors, brakes...you name it.

Google "pro-touring".....even 1st and 2nd gen camaro guys are going 18's and bigger with airride and sick motors. This board as a whole needs to loosen up on the guys running bigger wheels.

Re: 22inch irocs

Now that is a horrible picture! if I was a IROC-Z, I would do this to that RS , , , , . I would never miss-match a rim that gives a Caramro its signature look. That picture diserves to be in the Ghetto Thread., ,

Rims have always been a matter of personal taste no matter wha the age of the owners.

I think it's a positive that 3rd gen f-bodies are sought out, purchased and personalized by younger buyers who like to expand on styling and the most recent trends.

Wasn't that long age when 17s hit the market and caused the same type of debate.

Cars and style are always evolving. It's the nature of the hobby.

Re: 22inch irocs

Just make sure you have a set of huge Brembo discs all around for looks and the extra weight.

Nothing worse than stock brakes behind big wheels, especially drums...

Re: 22inch irocs

I am not a fan of 20-22" rims on these cars...no way, 18's is the perfect wheel but that is my opinion and it doesn't matter, it's your car man...do what you want, when you post something like that up on a forum you will get mixed reviews or opinions...so expect for people to either like it or hate it!

Granted! I am probably older than you and my tastes are different but you gotta ask yourself this: Do you want to be a guy with a cool looking car that will get the thumbs up wherever you go or do you want to be one of those little gang banger honda dudes that will get hassled by the cops all the time?

Re: 22inch irocs

I remember when G.M. advertising was calling 16 inch wheels "huge".I don't remember 16",17" or 18" being that big a deal back in the late 80's and early to mid 90's.Most all the car guys i dealt with young and old didn't have a problem with it.There will always be haters though.

Since these huge(22 inch and up)wheels have come about, the cars they get put on no longer look proportionate. We welcomed bigger wheels 20 or so years ago because they filled out the wheelwells and looked good. Now it's all gotten crazy.I had a set of 22's on my '05 GMC Denali and it looked great! The wheels filled out those huge wheelwells very nicely.Put those same wheels on a car with tiny wheelwells and it looks disproportionate.I've seen Chrysler 300's and Chargers both with 22's and they looked good, but they have huge wheelwells to accomodate those 22's,they look correctly proportioned.Notice that word...proportionate...say it with me,p-r-o-p-o-r-t-i-o-n-a-t-e.

Re: 22inch irocs

government wants us to keep our tires inflated but dont give the car manufacturers **** for making cars with wide tires and heavy tires. A thinner tire is better on gas. backwards *** ****. In california CARB made it mandatory for auto repair facilities to check and inflate tires to proper levels or face a fine. Even if your not doing tire repair/brake/suspension repair work.

Re: 22inch irocs

Eh I was kind of ranting on this thread about big tires. basically im against big tires. lol. sorry. The guy above me posted about manufacturers putting 20's on new cars so I kind of went off that. Again sorry. I am against 22 irocs on camaros. I have seen some on craigslist in my area if anyone wants some.

I think we understand it very well, and if your all about "racing", 22's are probably at the bottom of the list for racing. FYI out here in the country, EVERYTHING cracks and is at a much faster pace than your "tuner" stage of racing. Just take a trip into central U.S you'll find that known very well.

P.S: Be sure to bring a pair of boots if you do come, Nike air max's tend to get dirty real fast around here.

yeah 22s are in the bottom of racing no brainer. i have a 91 z l98 and a 89 iroc l98 and i would not put rims on it hell no. i like my 16s i love the og look. and i like to kill mustangs here and there but all im saying is that if i had a 305 tbi rally sport camaro(which are slow) ,like i once had , i would trow rims asap.why? becouse im not going to race whit a RS. anybody would beat me. so just cruise on it and make it look nice. but ay thats just me thats what i like. if u dont like it, keep it to urself. i dont see why some have to hate right away

You might want to take your own advice and keep it to yourself.

All of our cars are slow, who are you kidding? A 14 second time slip is respectable, but far from fast, it teeters on the borderline of being called "quick". I'd like to see more pictures of that Maui Blue RS though.

Re: 22inch irocs

If you think it´s the right thing to do, go for it, and do not let anyone keep you from doing so.

If you want an opinion based on some technical facts, listen to all those who advised against it.

These cars were built from 1982 untill 1992.
They came with 14", 15" or 16" wheels.
This means the suspension geometry for these cars was built around 14-16" rims.

(22"x9" would allow you to fit a 245/25-R22 tire which would result in a 26,8" tire size, which is only ,8" over stock, would feel like driving on wood, get you damaged rims even when hitting a small hole in a road, not have the ability to deflect which means increaded tire wear, and lss of grip in corners, and due to nearly 0 flexibility allow you to do burnouts even with an iron duke equipped camaro)

Fitting larger then stock rims allows you to fit narrower cross section tires which makes sense up to a certain point. Driving comfort will be reduced, to the benefit of better feedback. A too narrow cross secion would prohibit the tire from adjusting itself to the road surface.

The above technical reasons will dictate that a 17" or maybe even 18" rim will allow you to fit tires that improve handling by giving you better feedback and reducing the tendency of tire deflection and accompanying reduction of the tires contact patch.

My personal belief is that these cars handle best with 17" rims. The suspension geometry can deal with the rim and tire size, and the tire has a degree of flexibility left allowing it to ideally adapt to the road surface.

It is also my opinion that 16" or 17" rims look best on these cars, even if some clean and stock looking cars look fairly well with the 15" Z28 rims as well.

22's are disgusting.

I don't personally like anything above 18's on these cars.

Re: 22inch irocs

You dont have to lift if you have the right 22" in tires. I have an 87' vert and im thinking of putting some 24" inch irocs, this guy i know has a ttop iroc on 24s and it looks tough. Keep in mind alot of these guys on here that dont like big wheels are like in theyre 40s and i respect theyre opinions, but im in my mid twenties and i love big wheels,I got a 00 single cab silverado on 26s and you cant tell me nothing Then again you know what they say "everythings bigger in Texas"

I was 21 when I got my 86 IROC. At 21, I thought the 20" and 22" where outright disgusting on ANY car PERIOD. It's a car, not a truck or SUV. So your being biased. There are many mid 20 guys who think 20" or 22" rims are terrible on Camaro's. Just saying.
