rearend wobbles side to side at low speed
Hi guys. Need some help diagnosing my side to side wobble. My read driverside rim wobbles a little bit but I never had a wobble affect until last night. At low speeds the IROC wobbles side ways. I know its not the front end because there is no play in the steering wheel. So is there any advice or suggestions to what might be causing the wobbling? I'm gonna put on my spare tire later on but if the problem is still present after swapping wheels, what can cause the wobbling? Thanks in advance guys.

Tire bulge...Bent rim...Loose lug nut(s)...Bent axle...Tire imbalance.....All possibilities based on just a "wobble" description over the internet.
Jack the rear of car up. Secure the axle on 2 jackstands, block the front tires, start the car, put it in Drive, but do not accelerate any & have someone watch the wheel for wobble, or have them start the car while you watch the suspected wheel..

Re: rearend wobbles side to side at low speed
Months ago I did just that. Had the rearend jacked up and that's when I noticed rear driverside wobbling. But it never wobbled until last night. I'm gonna put on my spare and drive around to see if the wobble goes away. All those examples is what I needed to hunt down the culprit. Thanks Stephan. Ill keep u updated on my progress. By the way, I see that u changed your avatar. The other one was better IMO.

Re: rearend wobbles side to side at low speed
how old are the rims?
only takes 1 good pot hole to ruin a rim of any age, if they are stock rims after 20 years of road use, they are all bent.

Re: rearend wobbles side to side at low speed
Stock IROC Rims. Its wierd though. Months ago I noticed the rim was wobbling but the Camaro rode smoothly. Whether it has a bent shaft or a bent rim, it rode smoothly. So Im leaning more towards a bad tire. Well the sun is about to set in an hour and I gotta go to my uncles party so there will be no time to test out the spare tire. Hopefully tomorrow Ill have time. If it comes down to a bent axle shaft, I will replace it. But here is a question for you guys. Is my disk brake axle shaft the same as a brake drum axle shaft? Drum brake axle is from a 6 cylinder RS. Not sure what year.

Re: rearend wobbles side to side at low speed
Been through allot of wobbles and it was always a rim, but a few times a rotor.
Rarley was it a tire, and when it was, it was dead obvious from busted belts making it ballon like it had a tumor.
take the tires to a shop and have them check "rebalance" and check rim run out.
Why the first thing I do when I get a car is buy new rims, nothing rides as nice like a car on new rims n tires.

Re: rearend wobbles side to side at low speed
EDIT: Found this from Dialed_In:
Hub diameter on the drum axle measured 6.0", hub diamerter on the disc axle measured 5.850" and the ID of the brake rotor was 5.900".
Further investigation in my Parts & Illustration Cat. show the drum and disc axles have different part #'s. Oddly, there's no distinction made between drum and disc when ordering after market axles.

Re: rearend wobbles side to side at low speed
If it ends up being a bent axle shaft, I got a friend who has an extra one. He told me to make an offer. How much would you guys offer? My buddy isn't really good at selling his parts. I bought a beautiful T-Top bag from him for $5. I bought a Superram runner set and edelbrock hi flow manifold base for $250 and managed to get his Summit Racing Alum roller rockers for free. So what figure should I throw out there?

Re: rearend wobbles side to side at low speed
Update.
After taking out some salvaged parts from my IROC today, I looked back and noticed that the treadlines where wavey. So I said the hell with it. I jacked up the IROC and slapped on my 80 spoke bolt-on Crown Wire Wheel ( similar to this one )and test drove it. No more wobble. I then inspected my tire and there was the problem. The tire created a bulge to one side. I have yet to see if the axle shaft is bent. I'll have to wait till income tax to have it inspected.Ill post a picture so that everyone can see how ghetto my IROC looked with my 80 spoke LoLo wheel.

Re: rearend wobbles side to side at low speed
I whipped out my old LoLo gold 80 spoke Crown Wire Wheels to see if in fact if the axle shaft was bent. I bolted on the wire wheels and dropped the IROC. Little did I know that there was no room to easily pull out the jack. So I played Tug Of War with my Camaro. HAHA. I won
. So I did the test drive and i got results. The axle is fine but the Camaro's tire has a bulge on it. I couldnt get the jack back under the IROC because the 13 inch wheels are so small that there was no clearance between the ground and the axle. So I grabbed my old hood assist stick that held up my hood(
) and drove over it. I now had enough room to instal the jack. But before I started to jack up the IROC to remove the wire wheels, I had to take a picture of my ghetto Camaro.

Yep, almost always the rim or a tire.
should run your hand over your tries every so often and give em a breast exam for lumps
THey often start small and then grow n grow, or sometime the tires just explodes if enough of the belt is broken.
[had one do that on the eway, in the rain, in a turn, right between two semi's.]

It's a good thing that you didnt lose control when you had your blow out. Supreme Member

I just kept cool and held a steady corse, even a tiny flinch and I probably would of went for a "spin"
great car 86 Skyhawk with a stick [sipped gas with lots of pep], but them tiny 13in tires were like bombs when they let lose. Had several explode on it.
