All I Want is a Set Of 245/50/16's

OK I have looked thru countless threads and have seem to come to the conclusion that these tires are not in as big of demand as they were 15 years ago. My 87 IROC has been parked for about that long in my garage and now is the time I'm thinking to bring the ole girl out. The old Gatorbacks are no longer made...Yea I know Where have I been Under a rock....and Goodyear has a back order on Eagle F-1's. So I phone a few tire shops and they told me sorry nothing available in that size. I dont want a bigger tire, or 17s, or 18s. I just want a replacement. Are these a dieing size?

What is everyone running??

Re: All I Want is a Set Of 245/50/16's

I have Toyo Proxes 4's on my car they still make them in 245/50-16. the problem is that since our cars are no longer made there is very little demand for a tire that was only on cars for 10 years. Myself i'm considering a set of 17's or 18 for the car.

Why not BF Goodrich? Read the tire-rack reviews. There's plenty available in this size so I dont know why people wouldnt have it.

I just went through this; my car had the original Gatorbacks on it. I wanted Eagle F1 GS-D3s, but couldn't find any.

I ended up with Firestone Firehawk Wideoval Indy 500s (what a convoluted name!). They're great high-performance tires and work wonderfully on the car. My only complaint is they don't look as good as the OEM Gatorbacks, which had a clean sidewall.

C4 'vette guys too, I think their cars had 255 width GY Gatorbacks. I'd be fine with just GS-D3s, though.

I still have a set of Firehawk Z-Rated tires on the car. They will need to be changed this year. I'm in the dilemma of deciding to find replacement tires or just upsizing my wheels to 18's. Has anybody bought tires from ebay?

Second that! Have a "modern" look tho - not as chunky as the tires 20 years ago.

Hello Kelsroc!!

If you really wanted to, you could have a set of brand new GoodYear Eagle ZR Gatorbacks, however, you would only get them in 245/45/17 which would mean that you would end up buying a set of rims also!!

A set of chrome 17 inch Irocs would look good, with these Gatorbacks!!

I was looking to do this myself, just don't have the $$$$.$$ to do this, at this time!!

I find it a bit strange that they made over 1 million third gens with the 245-50-16 tires and there are so few choices left...

Re: All I Want is a Set Of 245/50/16's

I've gone to all the websites mentioned before and by far the cheapest is www.tirebuyer.com they may be a couple(no exaggeration) dollars more expensive but offer free shipping on pretty much all their tires. I ended up saving over $100 on my Nitto's. I searched for the 245/50/16s and came up with a few different choices. Ended up being $50 cheaper than tirerack.

Re: All I Want is a Set Of 245/50/16's

245/50R16 General Altimax HP. Put them on my 2000 V6 Camaro and love them. Ran a 14.8 in the 1/4 mile on them with a small dry burnout and nothing more than an exhaust cut-out and PCM reflash. When I moved it from the street to the garage this winter in a good deal of snow it still moved pretty well. I think I paid around 100 bucks per tire. Maybe 120 I can't remember.
