Spare Tire Canister

Where can I get my air canister checked and filled.I went to a GM dealer and they said that they don't do this service anymore, then went to a place that fills gas canisters like welding gasses and they don't do it either, anybody have this done lately.

I've never had it done, but I believe a fire extinguisher service shop can do it. It is filled with CO2.

Re: Spare Tire Canister

Would they know what pressure to fill it to? I used mine with the spare for what appears to be the first time ever (20 years old). It worked fantastic, but I need a refill now.

Re: Spare Tire Canister

Keep it for sentimental reasons, and just grab a $10 Walmart air compressor to carry with you.

Re: Spare Tire Canister

I think I would trust the air can to work more. Especially in the heat here.

Re: Spare Tire Canister

Trust a 20 year old can of air over a brand new 250psi compressor? Hmmm, ok then. I've had a $10 Walmart compressor for over 10 years now - always works with no issues, plugs in the cig lighter, and comes in a box that is 3in x 5in by 4in - can't beat that little thing - it's slow in filling a tire, but we are talking emergency use here.

Re: Spare Tire Canister

It's more that I have had several things that I have left in the car here, and they were automotive accessories, that have melted beyond use in the sun. That 20 year old can of air filled that tire in about 10 seconds and I was on my way, plus metal doesn't melt in the sun's heat.

Re: Spare Tire Canister

I am not sure. I think you can buy cans for inflating tires still can you not? I switched out that setup for a 4th gen spare tire donut years ago. I carry a cigerette lighter compressor powered with me for emergencies too. Just throw it in the locking compartment. And I do not worry about it "melting" of course here in Nor Cal it only get to about 108 on the hottest days...

Problem is air tanks can only be fill for so many years, a paintball store could probally do so but I know paintbally tanks are only good for 5 years(I think) before they need to be recertified. I doubt it would be worth the cost.

Re: Spare Tire Canister

I sent mine to the steel recyclers long ago after I spent it. I replaced it with a 20.00 compressor. Simpler and works for me. I do like the idea of the 4th gen donut.

Re: Spare Tire Canister

I was just wondering a little while ago what most of you do for a spare. I still have the original spare in my GTA, but the canister is missing. My spare feels hardened and looks dried out, so I'm not sure I'd trust it anyways.

I always keep two cans of Slime 'Spaire' in my van for emergencies, it can easily be cleaned out and won't damage wheels. I had to use it a few months ago and it got me 30 miles back home.
