Tire Recommendations for 12's

Here for some advice for when I buy new tires in a few months. I'm going to keep my stock 15x7 wheels and I'll be making about 400fwhp with 3.23's in the rear. Looking for something that will work well as a daily driver tire and will give me some grip for the occasional run down the track.
I only want/need to replace the rear tires and don't want to spend much more than $250. I've been looking at the Radial T/A's, but from what I've read they aren't very grippy.

By the time I get my tires I hope my suspension will be set up as such: LCA relocation brackets, Moog 5665's, Lakewood 50/50 Drag Shocks

Thanks!

Haha I know, it's a bit of a stretch. Apparently the max I can run is a 255 width tire. I'd rather not have to go to 8 or 10" steelies

You could have your 7s widened to keep the stock look, but be able to fit a wider tire.

Re: Tire Recommendations for 12's

Wish I could afford it. If I have to I'll go with 8" Bassett steel wheels- can't say I don't like the look of mismatched wheels, but I'd have to move up to 3.73's and clock high 11's so I wouldn't feel like a poser

But is a 7" with 255's really too small??

Radial TAs IMHO are not a very good tyre. I don't think you will run 12s on them. Hoosier make a 245/60/15 Quicktime that might be better and for 6-8" rim.

Yeah I've heard the "ice bricks" expression used many times in reference to the BFG T/A's track performance.

What's the longevity like on those Hoosiers? This car is going to be driven daily so I need something that'll hold up to the ****-poor roads around here and the occasional long trip depending on where I go to college

drag radials of any kind are a bad idea for a DD. If you need go fast tires on a DD, get a second set of wheels for the track

I thought about that but never really considered it- looks like I'll end up doing just that. Shortens the season by a bit for me but oh well

So then what are some decent DD tires? The Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T's look pretty nice.. even the Radial T/A's look nice compared to my current junk Cornell 1000's with 215 width that the last owner put on.

To the OP, this is by far the best option. Any kind of tyre that hooks well at the track will not last long on the street. A second set of rims will not cost that much, and you can use a cheaper set of street tyres for DD.

Re: Tire Recommendations for 12's

Point taken. Now to find a decent set of tires. So far I'm looking at the Firehawk 500's, Radial T/A's and the M/T Sportsman S/T's. Any other recommendations?

Looks like 245 would be the absolute max and I'd need a pretty rigid sidewall for that. That would leave me with the 235 T/A's. I'm not sure about the others

Re: Tire Recommendations for 12's

I've got Firestone Firehawk 225/60/15 on the front and 245/60/16 Radial TAs on the rear for DD, I put 26/10.5/15 ET Streets on a couple of 8" rims for the track. I would like some better street tyres. The fronts are OK. When I got the car it had 245/50/15 Radial TAs on the front but they were a bit short.

Re: Tire Recommendations for 12's

If you consider going with an 8" wheel then I would go with a 275-50-15. It will fit just fine on a 8" wheel....DR's are great on the street, I got a'lil over 18,000 miles on my first set of Nitto 555R's...315's.... and they were on a 2000 WS6 DD, w/440 to the wheels, they saw alot of track time AND I got it into the 11's in 1/4....There is alot of people in my area that run DR's on their DD's

The Nitto's are good in the rain I never had any prob's there....Mickey's are horrible in the rain, but great on dry roads....

I have BFG 315-35-17 DR's on my 85'...they are a'lil old but I will be replacing them with the Nitto 315's when I get it back on the road.....

If, down the road, I can dig up the $300 I'll need to have my wheels widened I'll gladly do that. 18k miles with my car (300-360 rwhp by the time it's finished) would probably be good for 4-5 years. But then with that much traction I'd probably end up spending $600 to rebuild the trans - for now I'm going with a Transgo shift kit and Corvette servo

Are there any "Ghetto" wheel widening methods people have used?
