I have a few sets of wheels and tires in the shop.

Silver is a set of CTW Motorsports wheels with 275-40-17 Falken Azenis 615K

Black has Continental Extreme DW 275-40-17.

The Contis ride a bit better, but the Falkens are much more grippy due to their super aggressive tread pattern.

275/35/ZR18 Sumitomo's all the way around on C6 Vette wheels. 8.5" front and 9.5" rear.

Never had less rear grip. Might be due to the fact that they're almost street slicks now, but the previous owner of said tires and wheels could lay rubber for a block with a stock TPI 305. I spin all the way through second with a mild 355.

In the rain? It would be safer to walk down the middle of the street than drive with these tires at a reasonable speed.

Cheapest tire on the market in that size, but you get what you pay for. My 245/50/16 Hankooks gripped MUCH better than these Sumitomos.

I rate them a 3/10, and only that high because they are $50-$100 cheaper a piece than any decent tire.

while most of us like to have some performance tires, many of us do very little driving. I go mostly to car shows so why would I spend a fortune on tires that will age faster than get worn out. more likely to dry rot and have lots of tread.

I went for General's Altimax HP and never seen another on here with them.
The are unidirectional and have good grip. they are a bit softer so they ride nicer and my kidneys thank me.

these are 245/50/16
at 97$ a pop they are a steal. I bought them at 81/ea before Obama increased tariffs on tires made outside the USA. They do very well and have good cornering grip.

Unfortunately Sumitomos do not grip anywhere as well as the tread pattern would indicate.

I can suggest that when you change tires, go look at the BFG G-Force, Continental Extreme DW, and the Dunlop Direzza - all excellent tires around $200 each with great wet weather performance.

 

Thanks for the advice. As soon as I get money together I was gonna go for the BFG's because they are a tire I trust.

Another downer about the sumitomo tires is the marks they leave aren't very dark at all.

 

What is the UTG tire rating on the tires? Might be high if the marks are light...

Sumitomo htz r iii 275/35/18

 

I have 215/65/15 Michelin Defender all season on my 89 Firebird Coupe 305 TBI. Put about 1,500 miles on them so far. Excellent dry and wet traction, great grip. Solid on highway, handles rough spots very well. Low noise. They are labeled "outside" and "inside" for mounting according to tread pattern. A little "fat" in sharp cornering, (I'm sure hi performance summer tires would do better), but I have high confidence in them overall in daily driving.

 

Got the same tire on my 1992 Firebird daily driver. I've put over 6,000 miles on them. I totally agree with everything you stated. The only thing I'll add is that they are advertized as 80,000 mile tires and I expect them to last at least 50,000 miles; probably more.

I don't understand the chemistry or physics of how Michelin can make a low noise, good gripping, smooth riding, high mileage tire. Shouldn't be possible. Tire Rack sells our size (215/65R15) Defender for $114 each. Great price for a great tire. My hats off to Michelin.

 

Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 Wide Ovals 245/50/16



Nice performance wet & dry, just bought them so idk how the wear will be... probably pretty poor seeing as treadwear rating is somewhere around 320 I think.

But so far I like em. Plenty of grip and they were only like $110 a tire.

 

The 1990 IROC rides on factory wheels with 255/50/16 BFG G Force Sport Comp 2's. Car doesn't get pushed that hard so these are working pretty well.

The 1992 RS has 255/50/16 BFG G Force Sports on the front and Mickey Thompson ET Radials in 255/50/16 on the rear on chrome IROC replicas. Anything less than a drag radial and the rears just spin.

The 1982 Z28 has some random takeoffs from the other cars on some leftover 1992 Camaro 5 spokes in 255/50/16. Until we decide how this one gets built its stored so the tires only have to hold air.

The 1988 GTA has a few sets depending on how we're driving it. On the factory mesh wheels there are 4 255/50/16 BFG Sport Comp 2's as daily driver tires, 4 Nitto NT01s for SCCA competition, and 2 255/50/16 ET Radials for the ocassional track pass. There is a set of 275/40/17 BFG R1's mounted on 17x9 2nd Gen Snowflake replicas that were used on the SCCA national tour. 4 275/40/17 Nitto NT05s on 17x9 2nd Gen Snowflakes replicas for street tire competitions. And 4 275/40/17 BFG G Force Sport Comp 2s that need to be mounted on where the R1s are not that the R1s are done. And I need at least 2 more sets of wheels for this one to cover all the options we need for the type of driving the car sees as a daily and event car.

 

245/50R16 Cooper RS3-A

 

Sumitumo 275/45/17 on front, 315/35/17 on back, wraped around 17x9, 17x11 zr1 replicas. Sumitumos aren't the best tire by any means but finding 315's for $168 isn't going to happen with any other brand. Good enough tire for me. A fresh rain or even a dusting of snow and you might as well be driving on ice. But with them being as wide as they are I find they stick pretty dang good in the turns

 

Have those same Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires on my 91 Z28, 245/45/17 front and 275/40/17 rear. I'm happy with them. The tires balanced with very little weight, are quiet, and smooth. They seem to grip well and are predictable in hard cornering. Its hard to beat the bang for buck with these tires.

 

continental dw's 275 f 295 r on c5 replicas... so far tires are good. hooks very well and really predictable in the rain, still need to tinker with the suspension to get a good feel in the turns

 

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus, size 245/50/16.

I ran the Gatorback tires from new until 2007. Then ran the GS-D3 from 2007 to 2011. I've been running the Michelin since then......One of my GS-D3 tires had an irreparable flat. And no GS-D3 available for months.....So I went with 1 Michelin and 3 GS-D3 for awhile. But the Michelins are a taller narrower tire despite being the same size. This made for one heck of a pull on the highway. With all 4 tires being the same Michelins, the car goes straight now.

I miss the aggressive looks and outstanding dry handling from the GS-D3 tires. But the Michelins are about as good of an all season tire as you can buy. They are W rated (168 mph). And they work about the same in terms of wet performance as the GS-D3 tires did. (Houston gets massive flooding from time to time). I didn't particularly want an all season since I live in Texas. But it was the only thing Michelin had for my car. I do like the 500 tread wear rating of the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires.

For the future? I'm undecided. I've read good and bad reviews against the BF Goodrich Sport Comp 2 vs Firestone Indy 500 tires. Some say one is great. Others say it's OK. Some say one is noisy. Others say the noisy one is quieter than the other one. *shrugs*

I might just end up getting some CTW wheels and then getting either Continental DW tires or else some Michelin Pilot Sport 2 or Pilot SuperSport tires. The OG-San 17" wheels are closer to my GTA wheels. But they're probably going to be even worse than GTA wheels when it comes to brake dust (tighter honeycombs and bigger wheel). The CTW looks to be immune to brake dust and a direct fit. Of course then I'm going to have to spend a fortune on C6 front brakes to fill up that cavernous CTW 17" front wheel.

 

Fronts are Cooper Cobra 235-60-15. Rears are 275-60-15 Nitto DR's.

so for your rear wheels does that 255/60 stick out far? on that 8 in rim? i have the exact same rim 8x15 ar 23 and i wanna get a 255/60 tire for it now im sure it would only help to take off the spacers but those rims only came with 4.5 backspacing? or is it 3.5?

 

Why spacers ? No spacers with this set up ! For the AR-23 and the only BS offered with the 15in wheel is 3.75 you can't go any wider than 255/60r15 without the tread hitting/sticking out past the flair. I think the 255/60r15s are perfect because the tire bulge is flush with the fender flare and the tread is under the well. Thats exactly the look I want. Here's a link to what I feel is the best tire combo with that wheel,and anyone wanting this look.
Also only soap and water to clean those AR-23s. No polish or any kind of abrasive. The wheel is a "clear coated" Aluminum.

I have a 92 RS with 245 Bfg sport comp II's on the stock 16 inch wheel. Difference between them and all weather tires is night and day. Handle great wet and dry, no complaints what so ever. Have almost 3000 miles on em, wear and ride really nice.
Some people think that they are "too loud", but some people think Mustangs are cool too. One guys opinion may only reflect what they think they know. There are cheaper options, but tires aren't something to skimp on either.

 

sumitomo 245/45/17s on front because it came on the vette wheels.nexen n3000 275 35 18s on back because the tire had great feedback.i still need to learn the best inflation pressure.

 

225 70 15 low budget ones that came with the car, on Rally II wheels ,if they weren't like new they would be long gone already, they ride like crap and really lay over in the turns.

New BFG's or some such are on the over next winter wish list.

 

275/40 17 Nitto NT-05R's back and NT555's front. Not much to report as its been only a month or so. Should last a little longer then MT drag radial I hope. Try to get pics soon.

Finally I find someone else running the same tires as me. I started with the altimax rts, 225/60r16s cause they had a 600 treadware, then I went to the altimax hps in the same size. I love the tires, they stick like glue. they are on a 16x8 btw. Tax season I'm looking at the same tires, but probably 245/60r16s, I like some meat on the sidewall, don't think I could find 55s though. I love tirerack!

 

As far as I know, no 245-60-16 or 245-55-16 tires exist, unless they are for trucks for something even more specific.

You can go with a 225-55-16, which is the same overall diameter as a 245-50-16, just a bit narrower. There are over 15 summer performance tires in that size, where 245-50-16 can only count 2 options.

 

I definately want to go a bit wider then the 225/60r16s I have, but try to keep around the same diameter. Thinking about going with the 245/50r16s, they should be a bit wider no? But I'm staying with the generals, they are awesome.

 

245-50-16 is about 1" shorter than a 225-60-16, but it is about 20mm wider (0.8").

 

Thanks for the info. Am I right that a shorter sidewall = better response and feel?

Generally that is true. As an example, a 245-45-17 should feel more responsive due to the 1" less sidewall, but in terms of numbers, may not make the car handle better.
