New 245/50-16 performance tire available

Just an FYI, I discovered a new performance tire that is available in our 245/50-16 size. It's the General GMAX RS. Just became available earlier this year and the magazine comparison articles are favorable. I bought a set at Discount Tire and am happy with them (although I have only put about 50 miles on them so far).

Good to know rt66er.

I put a set of Generals on my van last year, and have been very impressed with them. They to were very well reviewed.

Continentals (owner) seems to be really focused on making some good tires again under the General name.

I wonder how they compare to the BFGs?

Can you take some more pics of the tires on your car? Thanks!

Re: New 245/50-16 performance tire available

If I were to buy tires again right now, I'd probably go for the Toyo R888R's in 255/50R16. It's about $50 more for a set, but they are on a whole other level of performance compared to the BFG's. That being said, I only drive my Trans Am about 5000km per year so tread wear doesn't matter much to me.

First of all, to the OP, welcome to TGO, and thanks for posting up this info! Always good to hear about a new product in an otherwise limited market.

To my knowledge the R888/888r is an R compound DOT legal track tire, right? Not really an option for most of us, and you could argue that at that level of performance, many of us wouldn't be on a 16x8 wheel either.

Yeah I realize an R compound tire isn't going to suit everyone's needs. In my case, I only take my car out a couple times a week and it gets driven hard every time. A stickier tire would have been worth the $50 for me.

And yes, the stock 8" wheels are a bit limiting in terms of performance, but it would be interesting to see a comparison between a stock sized R compound and say a 275 width BFG SC2.

My next wheel and tire combo will likely be 17x10ish with a 275 or 285 R compound tire. It will be overkill, but I like G's.
