Wheels and TiresNeed help with wheels or tires? Got fitment issues? Have questions about tire performance and handling? Ask all of those questions here!
Hi everyone!
Im thinking about buying new rims and tires for my 86 Camaro. I dont really like my current rims... I was thinking of simply buying new ones however I also thought I should buy wider rear ones in order to save myself from possibly over-steering and help with stability. Has anyone done this? What sizes should I get on all 4 tires/rims? Any help is much appreciated!
Also, I found some iroc rims (I think stock) in which I really liek but these look to be bigger than stock. Does anyone know how big these are and if they are indeed stock?

Hawks has repros, you can try Ebay or ask around here, maybe somebody has a set laying around. BFG has a good tire that fits and looks good. Also, you can fit larger wheels and tires. A common upgrade is 275/40/17s all around. They look nice and aggressive without being overly large and gaudy but that's my opinion.
-As mentioned, thelarger factory size back in the day was a 245-50-16 tire on a 16" x 8" wheel. They look good, and even in 2018, they perform well.
-A common upgrade, again as mentioned, would be a 275-40-17 on a 17" x 9" or 9.5". Hawk's motorsports carries some wheels in that size, and even has some factory style Iroc wheels which will soon be available. Original 4th gen wheels for the SS and WS6 cars were also this size, but the offset is different, so I believe you'd need a spacer, but they do work.
-Many of the current aftermarket IROC wheels are 17" and 18" but they're only 8" (Hawk's will be 9" when they hit the market) wide, so while the tire is a more modern low profile tire, the width isn't really any different that the factory 245 tire width. I'd bet a dollar those that you have in that picture are only 245 or possilby 255, on a 8" wide wheel.
You CAN run wider rear tires, -as many members have done, but the offset of the wheel becomes a LOT more important and sometimes modifications are required.
if you do a ratio comparison of a known (the bolt circle in this case) you can get a rough estimate of the wheel diameter, in this case it looks like at least an 18", the style is obviously IROC, so its somebody's knock off, hard to tell who's cause of the coating on the wheel….
Problem is that even if you could find wider tires, they don't really fit on an 8" rim. .....I even thought about widening my rims, but with a lack of tire options.....wasn't worth doing. I too would ideally like a big fat tire on a 16, but looks like it's gonna have to be a new repop 17" from Hawk's.
....well there's also guys running 295's on 7" wide wheels too. ...especially with drag tires, the tire can be designed to run on a certain width. ...and height and sidewall plays a factor too. It's all about how the bead is designed. ...-and the taller the sidewall, the more wiggle room you have. ....but that being said, with a sidewall close to the stock 50 series (25.6" tall) I don't know of a tire designed to fit on a 16x8, wider than 255.
I did not see where he said "factory", I just saw 16". Whoops. Yeah the only way I can run 275's on my 16x8's is with proper backspacing and they're taller than the factory tire.
