Re: 16 inch drag radials?

I ran MT ET Streets on the 16" IROC rims. Old school bias-ply 10.5" wide.
This was kind of a track only deal although there may have been a couple of evenings when I'd "cruise" with them.

Next go around will probably be their SS Drag Radial.

Re: 16 inch drag radials?

The ET Streets were, yes. That particular construction (bias ply) isn't available in the MT lineup as it used to be.
The radial seems the way to go for me though. It seems to be a stand up tire although I have no direct experience with them.
QwkTrip has been experimenting with these and a couple of others although he's on a 17" rim. On his build thread somewhere around post #1373!

Re: 16 inch drag radials?

I believe his take was that he was unhappy with the MT's and even less happy with the M&H version. I think the Nittos came in last. Then again he has an unreasonable amount of horsepower available at the rear tires.

I dont have unlimited hp lol but a healthy 383 stroker with a first performance intake and a lpe219 cam gobs of torque also getting a s60 strange put in..so I want a decent tire so when at the track it will hook.

Re: 16 inch drag radials?

Perhaps a little dated and not 16" but an interesting view.
I actually raced a set of the McCrearys in the video. That was my best 60' to date.

This will bring the thread back to the top. Maybe others have an opinion.

Re: 16 inch drag radials?

I needed a set of streetable drag radials for my new powerplant setup. I have a thread about my build and skinny, quicktrip and some others gave me some great advice. I bought a set of Mickey Thompson ET streets SS back in late march and due to the covid-19 pandemic all the racetracks are shut down here in NJ so unfortunately I have only been able to use them on the street. they hook really great, but I have an auto not a stick trans. They are on my IROCZ wheels. I got a little squirreley while doing some high speed cornering on the street with them a few weeks ago, so I now know not to use them for that type of driving. They will be dedicated to track use and some more straight-line street duty.

Re: 16 inch drag radials?

Mickey street ss will likely be the best tire out of all
of them. But might wear faster. Choose your poison lol

my mickeys in 19” size have been awesome and have several thousand hard miles on them

Re: 16 inch drag radials?

M&h sells a 28 inch 275x55x16. I was going to order some soon. If you need a 28 inch tall tire in a drag radial for 16 inch wheels. That is your only option.

I wanted to stay close to 26 inch so my gear ratio with remain the same size... I do know the 28 inch would help with sidewall flex.

Re: 16 inch drag radials?

You may benefit from the larger footprint of the 28" tall tire if the suspension is more street than strip. Weight transfer is the big deal here and without it, the steep 1st gear of the 4L60/TH700 tends to blow the tires off. It was hit and miss with mine and I was certainly short of the torque production you have. I've got everyday shocks and struts and about the only tuning aid are airbags in the rear coils to help with the bias at the hit. Having the car lowered doesn't help either. That steep 1st gear allows a little freedom in the tire diameter choice. The difference at the stripe at 110 MPH is about 400 RPM.

Re: 16 inch drag radials?

I was thinking a 28x10 Hoosier slick It will have the rear to handle it..or we will try a MT et street SS..I'm sure its going to be trial and error to we find out what works

Re: 16 inch drag radials?

I would stay with a radial tire so you don't get a carnival ride at high speed.
