Re: Need new tires for my 1988 IROC Convertible

There's not a whole lot of options nowadays. I've used BFG's G Force Sport, and it's a great performance tire for the street. Consistently rated as one of the best, but also more expensive. There's a Continental all season tire that I've heard good things about too. ....and of course a few lower end tires, which in all reality will probably suit ya just fine if budget is a concern.

...or you can always get bigger wheels! ....I know I know...I love my stock 16's too!

I went with the Riken Raptor's last year. I've been happy with them so far.

I also went with the Riken's and am pretty happy with them. Overall, a good tire and a good price.

I went w/ the BFG TAs in 245/50/16 size. They are decent for the dollar.

Re: Need new tires for my 1988 IROC Convertible

My Michelins are just about done. Going to try and milk one more seasonout of them. Then I'll be buying the BFG g-Force COMP-2 A/S PLUS.

Not sure where you are geographically Luvchevs, but it operation in cooler temps (say below 45*) on a brisk fall morning, or unheated winter storage are factors for you, and ultra high performance (UHP) all season tire may be diserable.

Tire Rack has a nice review between the BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S PLUS, General G-MAX AS-05, and Yokohama ADVAN Sport A/S+. (Note that the BFG and a slightly different version of the General are available in our 245/50/16 size). Each has it's own merits, so it's an interesting read.

I went with G Max RS. Discount Tire had a sale last month. All 4 mounted OTD just over $500. Very nice tire.

I had them on my 1990 IROC-Z, and I liked them so much I also put them on my 89 RS convertible in the 275/40/17 size. They're an awesome tire, and killer tread pattern

Re: Need new tires for my 1988 IROC Convertible

Glad I found this, I think I am on my last season on my old BFG g forces. Have been a decent tire so it will likely be the new comp 2 or that General tire.

Re: Need new tires for my 1988 IROC Convertible

If you guys want to see what tires look like on our cars, here's a few of mine with tires that are still available in 245/50/16

1st one is Hankook Ventus V2 Concept 2. I don't like them. They're not an ultra high performance tire. They spin like crazy. Not very sticky.

Next is BF Goodrich G-Force Sport COMP-2. They're a pretty hard tire. Decent grip, though. They definitely weren't awesome at the dragstrip

Next is the General G-max RS tires. Awesome tread pattern, super sticky, great bang for the buck. I especially like the LOOK of the tire. They fit the wheel great...and the edge of the tread doesn't look like a tractor tire like the BFG's

Here's another look at the BF Goodrich G-Force Sport COMP-2. I have always thought the edge of the tread looked like an offroad tire. I had these on my 1995 Corvette, too

Those Generals are a nice looking tire on the wheel for sure, how are they for tread wear? Not a huge concern on a summer car but I’m still curious. They are also a bargain compared to the BFGs.

I can't really answer that. I don't really put a lot of miles on my cars. But, I will say that my white car had quite a few good, smokey burnouts, and it didn't seem to faze them

Here's a look at the tread (on right)

These were on a car I sold for my former boss a while back...

BF Goodrich Comp-2 A/S Plus tires. I didn't drive the car enough to give a good opinion of them. Again, the sidewall edge of the tread looks goofy to me...

Re: Need new tires for my 1988 IROC Convertible

Just a few quick comments to add to Dagwood's comments. ....When the tires are all dirty/dusty, like the one pic, I agree the shoulder/edge of the tread does look a little chunky. -On the other hand, the sidewall itself (on the BFG) is probably the most plain I've seen in years, which I love. The older BFG G force wasn't like this, but the latter comp2 version is beautifully plain, if ya like that! Personally I find the G Force to be a great looking tire, but it's all about personal taste.

...side note, I just saw that Nitto offers the NT01, which is a DOT legal road course tire, in our size. I didn't know that until just now. ....I'm sorting hoping that my 88 sees a good amount of track time, and was trying to find a way to KEEP the stock 16" wheels. This may be an option. Hmmm. Not for everyone of course. Curious if they're more street tire, or more road coarse.

I'm 100% with you on the plain sidewalls. Also, I agree with you on when the BFG's are super clean, that they do look way better. Here's a couple pics of them clean on my old Vette
