Car: 85 Z28
Engine: 305 TPI (dead) -> building 355
Transmission: 27 spline 700R4 (another one died) -> T5 goin in next
Found the problem!! (carnage inside)

The 305 decided to spit out a few connecting rod bottoms through the oil pan the other day. Here is the carnage.

If they don't show up try http://oldbluez.cz28.com for pics.

Now I just have to pull the 305 and see what else is destoyed, and make more trophies!!

FYI, a 350 is planned for replacing the 305, so not all is lost and old blue Z will be on the road again.....one day. I'm hopin to have the new engine and T5 in and runnin by October.

The problem

That is a stock (internal) 305 TPI with 175,000 miles and bolt ons that ran close to 13 second 1/4 miles that I loved to play with. When we replaced the intake last time, it started to develop oil pressure problems. I'm guessing a small amount of coolant got into the oil and messed up a bearing or two and caused the rod knock..... despite changing the oil.

I parked the car when the knock developed. The sound was so loud that with the car started, you could hear the clanking from inside my apartment with the TV on. My exhaust wasn't nearly that loud.

My plan was not to move the car until the trailer came to move it to my parents house to start the swap/build. That didn't happen because the apts had construction and forced me to move or pay $150 tow fee + $1.50/mile charge. When I moved it back to the original spot, the bottom end decided to just let go.

Well, I'll have more pictures of the carnage in the future, including that piece of rod sitting on the crossmember.

The original plan was to build the 350 and blow it up with an NOS kit my buddy has on his shelf..... never did get to do that... sniff.

Car: No more birdy
Ive got one just like that sitting behind the shop from a customers IROC, biggest pile of crap IROC I might add. Funny because he asked my how did this happen to his engine and was thier anyway to fix it cheap.

Sound like your 350 build might need some ARP bolts all around.

I'm just messin with ya 84 Restore.

Yeah, about that hole... I'm going to use duct tape and some JB weld with sheet metal conformed to the pan. Cuz I am drivin around in a V6 TPI right now!!

(yes, I'm kidding)

While it hurts, this is a good pain though.

I'll be using ARP bolts all around for the new engine.

That's SWEEEEET. Sorry it let go, but at least you knew about it and were prepared for the inevitable.

What kinda RPM were you turning when she let go? Was it just tooling through the parking lot near idle or were you................ well, ............. "helping things along" with liberal throttle applications? Be honest.

i think its kinda obvious that he was going faster then idle. lol..

i might have pics up soon too... one of the cars im playing with has a horrible knock.
a friend of mine just fragged his 79 firebirds motor, so i might barrow his nitrous system and go frag a 305.

Nothing quite like 'helping' a dying motor put its last foot into the grave, huh? I wonder - how impossible would it to rebuild a grenaded motor like that? I mean, I realize it would need a total teardown, magnafluxed for cracks, prbably a lot of new reciprocating components, but... could it be done? (Not that I want it - I'm happy with my L98 thank you...)

I had a DZ302 once that spit a rod out of the side of the block, it left the piston up in the bore. Tha car started and ran good enough to pull it up on the rack. I was kind of proud of that.

I've never seen one that threw a rod that was "saveable". Normally the piston ends up in pieces, rod hits the bottom of the cylinder, puts a nice crack up to the head, Crank journal gets banged up good.

Not too much left that can be saved or trusted....again, it's a paperweight.

Once the rods are out, I've never seen a block salvageable after that. There are some aluminum blocks that have "windows" in them that were welded up though, I guess it just depends on where it was hit and the cost of a new block.

That's because the piston is usually going down on the power stroke when the rod lets go & continues down into the crank.
