9 bolt axles and brakes

Hi all,

How do i pull the axles out of a 9-bolt?

I know it's nothing like a 10 bolt pinion bolt c clip thang. It Un bolts from where?

I just got a nine bolt out of the junkyard part # 10054239 w/3:27:1 (1988?) and need to pull out the axles. I'm putting my drum brakes from my ground up 10-bolt on the nine. The calipers and related are junk. From the measurements i've taken so far, this will be a simple swap. The 10 bolt will be junk when i'm done because i have to cut off the ends (ears), modify, and bolt to the nine. I'm doing this because i don't want to spend at least $500 in parts to get a brake system i don't want up to snuff. Calipers, hoses, cables, master, porp valve, etc. I'd rather put the $$$$ toward some Baer claws and and a nine inch i plan on in two years. Right now i just want to be back on the road.

Has anyone put drums on a 9 bolt before or am i a pioneer? If so i'll take pics and e-mail them to anyone who might be collecting data on 9-bolt rears.

How is the nine bolt as a whole? It looks much more HD as far as webbing, tubes, etc. Has anyone scattered a 9 bolt? My 10 bolt lasted through 15 years of me beating it before it scattered. I'm assuming the cone type posi unit will take more abuse....????

Thanks for reading/responding to my ramblings.

Edit your message. You started calling the 9 bolt a 9 inch.

9 bolt axles are held in just like a ford 9". They're bolted on from the outside. You'll see the bolts behind the rotors.

The 10 bolt backing plate won't fit on the 9 bolt without some modifications. The bolt holes won't line up.

I ran 11.8's with a 3.27 geared 9 bolt before swapping to a 10 bolt because gearing and aftermarket performance parts were easier to get.

Put the backing plates (drum) on the 9-bolt and it is a snap. A little trimming here and there (very little) and 4 holes to drill. Piece of cake really. It seams the 9-bolt was designed to make this swap a possibility maybe GM thought it could happen so it was made that way. The only thing that would make it a perfect swap would be a little bit different design of the backing plate.
