3.73 or 4.10
3.73 or 4.10
Which gear should I go with, I have a rebuilt 305 with a cam that pulls good from 3k-6k. is it worth it to go to the 4.10's or would that be too steep, I also will be getting a 2800 stall just not sure which brand. I have 2.73's now.
Thanks,
Bryan

You will like more low end torque 4.10s produce. If you have a cam that pulls thru that range, then you definitely want a 3000-above torque converter, and 4.10 gears. The 3.73s IMHO don't run as well with high rpm camshafts as 410s do (they will do great though, this opinion is solely based on a fun factor
). I like the 4.10s with my LT4 cam: sometimes theres too much wheelspin though. It is really fun slammin the throttle to the floor, and powersliding down an empty road. GOTTA LOVE TORQUE! I love 3.55 and 3.73 gears to death, but I think they perform better in turbo and s/c cars. But with cams, get the 4.10, and have fun!
Thanks- It's 4 in the morn, I'm ramblin!

I think with the cam in your sig that 4.10 gears and 2800 stall will be too much for the power band of that cam especially with nitrous. To remove any doubt call Competition cams. They will recommend proper gear ratio and a stall converter.
I would go with 3.73's and 2400-2600 rpm stall converter. With your cam I think you will be faster with this combo. If you just want to spin tires go with the 4.10's and 2800 stall.

Yeah I say go with the 3.73 because u will go through your powerband so fast with the 4.10s. The small cam & heads on your motor wont pull on the top side so your going to slow down!
Remember to much of anything is not good for u.

I am going to the 3.73's from 3.42's this weekend and I am a little bit nervous about it. I love the 3.42's. I get good ilage and great power off the line. The 3.42's have bit the dust so I bought an auburn posi rear to put in. I would add a posi if you can afford it.
Didn't you see that my opinion was solely based on a fun factor
? But I agree, get 3.73s if you are more concerned about top end. I've had my Formula past 110 with 4.10 gears. Once again I agree, there is too much wheelspin with my 4.10 gears (read on my post above)! I wish they had a 3.90 gear for our 7.5 rears. I think those would be just right for our cars.

I upgraded to 3.42's from 2.73's and I wouldn't think of going lower than that unless I was building a strictly racing engine. I have dealt with lower gears (3.90's) in another engine with a high lift cam and I did not like how I lost alot of top end.

No, I've been explaining how I had too much wheelspin thru 2nd gear, then hooked up and accelerated over 100. I would've been in the mid-hi 13's if I would have hooked up on the line. Why is it so hard to believe? I know of a Mustang with 4.10s that ran a 13.8 over 115 mph. I just couldn't get any traction, no VHT put down. Read the TBI posts people have been giving me s*it about it, and I'm tired of explaining it to every single person. It is physically possible to run that bad of a time with that mph. It's not impossible. I hit the throttle half way, sending me sideways through 2nd, then hooked and threw me back into the seat and I saw the speedo jump to 110. The car accelerates very fast with 4.10s, but it just doesn't like seeing 120 mph. I was almost redlining going 110. I will be taking that bad time down...so no one will bother me anymore.
