Ok, I have almost finished redoing the plastic pieces in my car with the krylon fusion paint. I am going from a light blue/grayish to black. The paint looks great, only complaint is the spray paint can seems like it’s too full. After you finish spraying it kind of leaks out real thick, then after you have used about 1/3 of the can it works great. Two of the three cans did this to me. Here are some pics.

I just saw a commercial for this stuff, it like moleculely bonds with the plastic.

I think I am gonna use it to paint my louvers and all my interior plastics.

How does this stuff work for you, cause it sure does look great.

 

I have been waiting for something like this for the longest time. Keep us posted on the durabilty and give it a scratch test.

 

This is very interesting. I painted my interior panels black with regualar paint and the things always scratched, revealing the red interior plastic.

I got fed up and used black truckliner spray. It worked pretty well. It still peels and chips around the plastic screw area, but its still a big advancement from just painting them.

Now that this paint seems to molecular stick to the plastic, I think I will have to try it.

Vinyl spray works ok too, I used it on my armrests. Its fading a bit because I only used one coat.

Truck Bedliner Spray and Vinyl spray was the closest I got to sticking to that oily plastic.

 

i have a question....how does the drivers side rear storage panel come off.....i have been stumped for a very long time now

 

hmmmm..ima have to try that....i acidently got some copper header gasket spray on my backmost hatch panel.....how much does this cost per can

 

Sure will, should have all the paint and new carpet in by the end of next weekend. But don't count on it . The can says that it takes 7 days to fully adhere and become chip resistant. It was dry to the touch after 10 min.

Its one long piece, from the back to the speaker cover. You have to take all those plastic screws out, take out the stud that the back seats hook to out, pull the back seat belt cover off, take out the seat belt assembly, unhook the strut that supports the hatch and I think that’s it.

I paid $4 per can at Sherwin Williams.

 

I have been wondering this a very long time also.

There is like a hidden screw that I cant get undone. It makes me angry. I will try and get some pictures later. And it is really hard to explain what I am saying. But in the rear driver's side, about 10 inches from the end of the trunk, there is a plastic screw with a shield over it, and I cannot figure it out. Should I just rip it out?

..Back to topic, thanks for being the "guinea pig" I have really wondered about this stuff, and it would make changing the color of my interior so much easier if it works.

 

hehe, dupilor color makes a really good spary can version, does good, can get it any walmart, allso it helps to make sure you wash the pieces with good ol soap and hot water, , to do it proffesional, you should spray on primer then spray the color, with proffesinal interior dyes,

 

yeh the one in the middle of the sotrage?......you slide the whole panel forwards or backwards and itll come out...not sure which though...i can check when i get home form school if nobody responds by then

 

would that be a good spray for the louvers? i wana bring out the blackness if you will, of my louvers... there kinda dull looking. i want it to be like a dark black..

 

Your right with the Dupli-Color you have to sand and prime and spray, and it will eventually chip and flake off, been there and done that. The beauty of the Krylon Fusion paint is, no need for all of those steps. Just clean and spray. It is recomended that you use an ammonia based cleaner on weathered surfaces, and on new or unweathered surfaces a quick wipe with standard paint thinner, and let it dry. Sherwin Williams ($3.99) is the only place I have seen it but Wal-Mart said they will have it later on.......

 

id love to see how that stuff holds up, hopefully itll stay on there nicely without scratching up and peeling for a while. ive been throwing around the idea of spraying my interior panels.

Ok the screw is like the plastic pins that hold on the door panels. they are pushed into a square piece of plastic that fits into a square piece of metal that hanges down on your car. the pn and square plastic piece are both available at parts store, so if you break either is ok. The sell tham at autozone I know. I have had to replace them many times. You can use a panel puller to get some leverage and work the pieces apart, or you can just pull and breay the plastis pin &/or square clip. here is a pick of the metal piece the square clip clips to...this is my rear cargo area when I was sound proofing

I have a couple extra plastic pieces. I may give that a shot. See how it goes. I'll try and scratch the hell out of it. (scratched allready in some spots) and let you guys know if it is worth while.

 

raif, that looks like my interior. i just ripped all the interior panels and carpet out this weekend. got new carpet sitting in my room right now, and i'm going to paint the panels from blue to black.

bubba, why are you selling your lt? i would've decided to keep mine if it was as nice as yours

I'm putting gfx's on my car. This morning I painted them with Fusion paint (I'll post pic's when I get home tonight or tomorrow). It wasn't like you described, the paint sprayed just like any other spray paint. Did a real nice job too!

I was thinking of using thier black. How shiney did it come out? Does it have the stock plastic shine or is it very shiney like it was just armour-all'ed?

 

The black is pretty shiney, like it was just armour-all'ed. If you do paint the panels, you will have to be careful with them, the paint will scratch off.

 

so what's the durability of this stuff? ...besides your "it will scratch off" comment.

I'm contemplating doing to my 91 what I did to my 87 as far as switching everything to black. If this paint is everything they claim it to be - I won't buy new panels, I'll paint the old.

 

Where can you get new panels? Do they make them in red anywhere still?

 

I got a can at wal-mart and I tested it on an old console piece and after just drying (waited 30 minutes tops) it wouldn't peel from being vigorously scratched with my finger nail. All it left was a slight wear about the same as if I'd done it to the bare plastic console piece. It impressed me so much versus the other products I've seen that I'm going to use it to redo my interior even though it's already black and in very good shape. This stuff works! It hasn't been out long enough to see how durable it is over a reasonable period of time in terms of becoming brittle or fading. But from what I witnessed, I'm willing to try it. I must wish it was available in more colors.

 

a friend of mine used it on his mustang and that stuff is awesome. No chips yet and he has had his panels in for about a month now and now scratchs. I used that VHT stuff and it sucked. This fusion stuff is good.

 

can you tell that it has been spray painted? or does it look "stockish" ?

 

actually I think it looks stockish. If you put a clear coat on it might not though. But all he did was spray it and I think it looks good.

I just bought a can from walmart. Man, what a mess! I sprayed one panel, everything was fine. I started spraying another, when all of a sudden the paint was not only spraying from the nossle tip, but squrting from where is connects to the can as well. Before I realized what was happening, it dripped all over the place. It even dripped on my panel and left a huge splotch! I spent an hour with paint thinner cleaning the paint off and will have to redo the panel. I've used alot of different sprays, but this has got to be the worse mess yet. Be careful everyone!

 

That happend to me... hah. I shook the can, and paint flew all ove rme. I didnt care.

Just cover the top of the can with masking tap. That is what I did.

 

what do people think of the krylon vinyl paints? i've been thinking about touching up my interior panels with the driftwood/tan color, but wanted to know how well that does. any comments?

also, did you know kyrlon makes duplicolor? i never realized that before i went to their website to see if the fusion came in tan. i've been using krylon's red as a base coat for a long time, and i've also really been impressed by their clear. that's my standard clearcoat when i paint the GFX with cans (which i've done a couple times on previous cars). always holds up real well. in fact, the decklid, rear bumper, and all GFX were krylon/duplicolor jobs...

 

JR305 - (off topic) is that "speaker plate" custom, aftermarket or a stock piece?

 

Definatly let up know on the scrathc resistant test. My interior is a stock black and tan but is unbalanced I've been thinking of painting some more of it black like the harch area and arm rests.

 

Well, its an entire box that Q-Logic makes. I left out the rest of it in the pic. I bought it at Best Buy for 299. It's pretty expensive, but looks stock. They make them for 10s or 12s.

 

I would relly like to see if it is good on the durability.

 

I bought a few cans a while back and sprayed my patio furniture. It doesn't scratch right off, I can tell you that. I cleaned them with soap and water before I painted them and they made it through my 4th of July party without a problem. I am guessing it would do even better inside a car...
