need help picking a cam
i now have an LG-4 rebuilt .030 over, with an edelbrock performer intake and an edelbrock 600cfm performer carb. i want to cam my engine now, and want a lumpy idle and enough low but more middle range power, im also on a tight budget: do the summit cams out of their catalog seem like they would be good enough quality? they're only 80bucks for cams and lifters, and they have a nice choice selection. sound like they are too cheap? also what duration do you suggest?
There's nothing wrong with the quality. You're just not getting a high tech lobe profile. My son has one in use right now (non-GM application) for almost 2 years.
The #1103 is probably the most that you'd want to run with a stock converter and gears.

I'm running the 1106 in my car now. The quality is good for $80. Car starts up and runs great, never gave me a problem. But from what I've heard its got really lazy ramps and isn't all that great performance wise compared to the newer grinds from comp and crane. But it'll definately be better than stock. My friend just put an LT1 cam in his 305. It lopes a bit at idle, you can definately tell its got a cam in it and he got it for $45 shipped. So if your LG4 is 87 or newer and you need a roller cam thats what I'd use.

Any cam that makes a 305 lope at idle isn't going to be very useful to you on the street. It just means the engine doesn't want to run and you've lost low-end power, something you don't want to lose on a small ci engine.

as far as a stock converter, my cars 5-speed, so i dont need to worry about that. i think im gonna get a crane energizer with 216/216duration. maybe the 218/218. we'll see

As long as you are using stock heads, your engine will benefit most from a dual pattern design. The factory was notoriously sluggish on the exhaust port design and they need all the help they can get to get the exhaust gasses out of there.
Ther LT1 cam has been used many times with great success in 305 engines.
