Aluminum bumper weight differences revealed!
Hi everyone, I did this web page last night, and just got around to uploading it. I'll be linking it into the site in the next few days, but want to offer you a preview. It details the mysterious aluminum bumper and actually clears up for once and for all the weight difference. Now, just as I type this, I hear that there may actually be TWO versions of the steel bumper and TWO versions of the aluminum bumper. This is EARLY third-gen Firebird components.

If anyone is looking for one I pulled one off of my 83ta. I got in a little accident but the only thing that got messed up was the honeycomb. We fixed it but I replaced the bumper support when I got a new bumper cover. Its for the front.

ok, heres more pics!!
i took off my stock 91 bumper since i was doing the LS1 swap (and to reach back that far, i had to take the nose off.
i left the weights at home, so you'll have to wait until tonight to see them... but i weighed my stock one, and the alum one.
the plan is to mark and drill holes in the alum one.. basicly make it as light as possible, while still supporting the nose from moving.
the alum one is tweeked a little... but i can fix that...
it isnt there for impact absorbtion anymore.. just there to support the nose at high speed.
heres some pics.
black one is steel. blueish/dirt is alum.

and last, but not least...
i almost think the rubber/plastic impact "eggcrate" stuff weighs more then the alum bumper does. lol

note: all weights INCLUDE the unmodified "eggcrate" plastic/rubber. you need that stuff on the car to support the nose anyway, so it might as well be included in the weight.
82 camaro alum bumper (unmodified) weight: 20lbs
91 camaro steel bumper : 26lbs
not as much weight diff as i hoped.
HOWEVER... i plan to heavily modify my alum bumper to be even lighter... the only reason im running any bumper is to support the nose at speed.
i'll update this when i get around to modding the bumper.
