I assume the crack can be welded, then stick in a Wonderbar, which is essentially a steering box brace.

The steering box brace was originally designed to remedy the exact problem that you are having. Get the crack fixed and get a wonderbar.

The only fix is to have it welded back together. The wonderbar is a great measure for prevention though.

In addition to the wonder bar you shold install the frame rail - to - cross member braces that were installed in the Z-28's and IROCS. I think these things were also installed onmost firebirds after 86.

There is one brace mounted on each side of the engine bay and they help keep the frame "square"....... early 80's Sports Coupes and Berlinettas didn't get these braces and the result is a lot of torn radiator supports on the drivers side frame rail ! ( due to the stress from the steering box ! )

There is also another addition brace that is mounted under the drivers side "battery box" that you could install to stiffen the front end up a little bit !
