to box, or not to box, that is the question...
got a wheel hop issue and don't have the money to fix it with the right tires right now so i am hoping to eliminate at least SOME through a set of lca's. here's the situation though, i am VERY poor...20yr old trying to make it on my own. should i go and by some steel plate and box up my current lca's? or should i save my pennies and put a set of tubulars on it? car went 13.888@100.24 with horrible wheel hop.

there was a guy selling a decent set of lower control arms on this board's classifieds for 65 shipped. i boxed my own because i was in the same situation as you, college expenses, and i had a farm buddy with tons of flat stock. here are how mine turned out.
also done with a stick welder and my first big job to. didnt turn out so bad.

but they are tubular hotchkis peices with a spohn torque arm and a hotchkis panhard rod.
i already have a spohn panhard rod, so i was wondering if i should save the $110 or so that the lcas are.

is you car lowered? that is one and according to spohns web site the lca relocation bracket is to correct geomitery to prevent wheel hop. so new lca may not make any diffrence. they do require welding of them not a bolt in item.
what else do you have for a set up it may be another problem like wasted springs and shocks.

I boxed in my lca's, and it helped the wheel hop a lot. I can't say it was all the lca's tho, I also put in E. S. poly in the lca's at the same time, and pro springs as well. I think boxing in the LCA's work fine, and you don't even have to weld all the way down each side, you can weld about 2", then leave 1" gap or so, then weld 2".................

car is stock ride height, and stock suspension with a new set of monroe shocks and a non adjustable spohn panhard rod. my father has a set of the relocation brackets, but i want to know if they will help the problem before i start begging him for them.

look at you LCA angle right now, where it sits will dictate if you need them or not. IMHO that is just part of the problem, while it does effec the A/S properties, the REAL cause of wheel hop, is uncontroled spring movement. Get a new set of shocks.

I've got a set of tubular LCAs (mild steel) with poly bushings that I'll sell for $60 if you want. Powder coated black with a few chips in the powdercoat. Only been on the car for 250 street miles and 4 passes.
Let me know if you're interested. Give me a little time to get them to you though, I'd still have to order some rod ends for my new setup before I can take these off the car.

the car has brand new monroe shocks...
i have a set of Chassis Engineering adjustables in my shop with one season worth of passes on them. they are from my fathers car, he gave them to me. i am worried that putting these on the car will effect street manners as the car is driven everyday.

The poly has enough give to where they don't hit too hard. One thing I would recommend though, is make sure they're greasable. If I didn't grease my Spohns at every oil change they would start squeaking soon.
The Pro-Fab LCAs don't seem to squeak that I can hear, but I don't daily drive the car and the exhaust is a lot louder on the Formula then it was on the GTA.
Hope this helps.

sorry, i was talking about the Chassis Engineering Adjustable Shocks, not lca's.
my lca's are stock, i am boxing them tomorrow to see if it helps any, but i still want to get some tubulars when i get the money.
nape, i am not sure if you have checked your pm's, but i am interested in your lca's, but i am seriously lacking funds right now. just let me know when you are ready for me to buy them and i will let you know if i have the money. i think that two-three weeks and i should have the money.

No, I hadn't checked my PMs. Thanks for the heads up.
I'll put you down the for tubular LCAs.
Wouldn't happen to be in the market for an adjustable mild steel panhard bar, would ya? I know you said you've already got a Spohn, but I've got one of those too since I'm making a new one of my own.
E-mail me when you're ready, tj@midwaydisplays.com. I don't check my PMs often enough and I'd probably miss it.

I have boxed LCA's and PHR with poly bushings on my iroc. I also have crap *** elcheapo shocks on the rear (came with the car, holding out for either Koni red's or QA1's) with stock iroc spings (NNL's) and poly everything on the sway bar.. All I do is spin the tires at the track. Only time I got wheel hop was with the stock stuff.

A set of lakewood LCA's got rid of my wheel hop. I just installed eibach pro-kit springs though...haven't peeled out yet. It may hop really bad now I am not sure.

i boxed the lca's and removed the front sway bar. will removing the rear help any? i also had my dad's old 275/60/15 BFG Drag Radials mounted to a set of wheels. they have two seasons on them, but they seem to be sticky still. i really wish i had a set of 26" tires though instead of the 28" so i could take advantage of my 3.73 gear better.
going to the track friday. do you think i did right by these mods?
also, the 13.88@100mph was with a set of 235/60(26" tire), my best 60' was 2.05 but that was only once, still with bad wheel hop, every time else was in the 2.15 range. do you guys think that the advantage of traction will out weigh (or at least make up for) the lack of gear?

If you can drop your 60' by 2 tenths you'll pick up 3-4 tenths at the big end as long as the car doesn't fall on it's face up top.

Guy I know gained 2 tenths in the 1/8th by removing the front sway bar. He never had any traction problems...runs 8.7s with a stock l98. It is crazy. Smokes ls1s at the track a lot.

car went 13.75@100mph with a 2.03 60'. this was with less gear too (taller 275/60 verses other runs 235/60). hope to lower those numbers even more with a set of 275/50's next season. thanks for the helps guys.

mw66nova: off topic but i was checkin your sig and we have very similar engines except you have 5 more inches, a real exhaust, 3.73 gears, and a carb. i am hopin for a 13.7 after some chip tuning and a real exhaust. PM me when you get new times i am interested to see what your combo will run.
