Cheap Summit headers are _REALLY_ flowtech

Hello,

I bought a set of Summit headers for camaro/firebird, for 79.00 which came with an
O2 sensor.

Summit's product description was "requires major modifcations to stock Y-pipe".

After putting them in the car, raising the car on the lift and looking at it vs stock Y-pipe I said "screw this".

I ordered a set of Flowtech headers + y-pipe for our car. These came today.

I pulled the summit headers and put them on the bench . I opened the box and pulled the flowtech headers out and almost fell on the floor.

The headers were identical, tube lengths and bends, welds, thickness of flanges, etc.

I put the summit headers back in, and bolted up the flowtech y-pipe. It fit.

I called Summit and spoke to a sales rep. Explained it all to him. He then came back with "Well Flowtech makes our headers, they are the exact same thing - just cheaper. But we're not suposed to tell you that."

I then boxed up the flowtech headers and y-pipe and agreed to ship them back, and the sales rep. Is sending me a y-pipe for 95.00.

Now I've heard people preach horrow stories about summit/flowtech headers. Frankly I dont understand why.. They both went in in about 20 mins. They didn't hit anything. (I have a/c).. This is a 1989 Firebird, TPI car..

Anyway.. Like I said, Summit headers are $79.00, Flowtech headers are $99.00.
Y-pipe is $95.00. $175.00 for headers &
pipe that fit perfect in stock location are not bad.

Now of course, these arn't EQL length headers, and they don't have huge collectors either. But for the money, I think they work just swell.

I agree.the header bolt on the passenger side is a b#### to put on but they work for me.Now trying to find 13/4 headers on a budget.Fine for the 350 I had but not the 409(400 .040 over).

Well my car was TPI with no A.I.R.. SO I didn't have that in the way.. the headers fit
in from top of bottom, just make sure you put your spark plugs in _after_.. I didn't have
a dipstick in at the time, so it might have been easier for me.. I put the dipstick in after the headers were bolted.

You may want to consider taking your starter out if you wanna put the passenger side in from the bottom.. It went in from the top for me.

these really were easy to put in. the hardest part is starting the bolt with your hands, otherwise they go right in and tighten up.

are they 1-5/8" primaries or 1-1/2"? what is the diameter of the Y pipe? what is the diameter of the end that the cat goes to?

don't know about flowtechs, but with slp's, i had to disconnect the driver's side motor mount and jack up the engine, and we have to slightly move the steering shaft, because we don't want to ding the tube any more than it already is.

Hey,

Sorry I was in a business trip.

The summit/flowtech header is flowtech part #
11102FLT, it is the same header in the 11602
kit (which comes with the pipe). Wether or not you order them seperately, its the same price.. (99.00 + 95.00 or 195.00)

If you goto holley's website and click on flowtech you can get all the info on the header.

I personally think its not bad for a 200.00
header. It sounds mean, seems to flow fairly well, and went in easier than stock manifolds.

(mind you I have a lift)

FYI these are "shorty style" they exit down by the back of the oil pan.. _NOT_ block hugger headers.. Your on your own if you bought those.

I think I'll go with these headers. I've been looking for more than a year & they're $119 for the headers on Summit & $119 extra for the y-pipe as well.

No, not a record but I don't usually pay attention to dates on these threads. There is so much information on here that I'm too busy reading the threads for what I need to find.
