cool grill mod for $1.00

OK picture is crappy but maybe you get the idea.

Material is actually metal mesh (diagonal) used for gutter guards (Lowes).

It may look cheap and crappy, but hey, if you are bored and have a buck to spend.....

It looks much better in person. Just give it a shot and see what you think.

Oh and sorry for the cheapo digicam photo

I already had the fogs out because I bought the billet stainless grill and was getting the plastic grill ready. I was really stoked about the billet grille. But in the dec. issue (?? whatever is on the newstands now) of Super Chevy, this kid had done something really similar on his 4th gen camaro (2nd or 3rd page of personal car photos).

I knew that sold that material for mostly foreign car stuff, but could not find it at any autoparts store. So I just walked around Lowes until I got lucky.

So I just used a pair of tin-snips and finagled two pieces in there (one for each grill cutout). And screwed them down. Replaced the grill and shazzam.

Now, I am honestly thinking of keeping it and just selling the $150 billet grille.

I did the same thing with where I used to have bumperette on my Bird, except I used the black plastic gutter wire. I think it looks alright, but it is only a temporary measure until I get around to making flush bumperettes that have driving lights integrated into them.

You can't beat just a $1.

Dude, I did the EXACT same thing a few months back. The mesh I used is too thin, from far away you can't really tell it's there. I need to find something thicker...

HG & devian

HG...Hey man, great minds think alike. I guess its what you call a 20-footer mod. Any farther than 20 feet, and you can't tell. But hey, most mesh I think would be the same. The only thing bigger I guess would be the diag-mesh they use on ford focus's, but I don't know how that would look.

Devian, I think you should try the wire mesh (not plastic) and see what you think. I think it would look pretty good on your bird

I did try it - I didn't care for it much because it was not as flexible as the plastic one. Like I said, this is not a long term mod. I am only using the mesh to cover up the impact absorber bars. I cut off the mounting tabs for the bumperette, something I wish I had not done that because now I can't put them back on.

I had this same idea but then I put the front end cover on my car and I dont see the point in it seeing as how you cant see the grille very good on my car anyhow. I wonder what it would look like it I took the mesh griilguard out of the cover and put something like that in there in place of it

meridius i cut out the screen on my front end cover after having it on there for like 5 months and HOLY SHIZZY did it make it look TONS better.i have the bowtie grille on my RS,and i hated having it hidden cause its such a slick looking piece.so i cut the screen out in a matter of 10 seconds and what a difference.i bet it would look pretty sweet with that mesh in there too.my covers coming off though as soon as i get my new nose.thanks *** i cant wait to have my baby back to its original state(rear ended someone, crackin the nose and losing alot of paint )

one thing you'll want to do, is spray some clear coat on those things, or paint them.

mine weren't painted... they rusted, and now look like ***.

i'll fix it in the spring.

can someone answer me something here? I want to know why people like the one above like to flame things that they dont like somewhere that their opinion wasnt even asked for. I just dont see the point in doing things like that and if your going to be immature about it then I guess you shouldnt post at all.

I'll be sure and keep my opinion to myself from now on hitler.

how in the world can you post in a PUBLIC forum and expect everyone to have the same opinion. Hooray for conformists.

I did this on my car and since it is painted black - it is hard to even tell that it is in, and works great for a cheap mod. I dont think it looks bad at all - and it is needed with my "ram air" system. Mine has stayed in for 6 months without a problem.

I'll save my dollar.

And even though opinions weren't asked for, many people posted their positive opinions. Why is it the "no one asked for your opinion" only comes up when someone doesn't like something?

They probably transposed the numbers and it's supposed to read "98-02 Camaros". That would seem logical since those are all the same grill style.

It's not his opinion that was the problem, it's how he went about saying it.

I was going to do that exact thing about a month ago, and was wondering how it would look...
Why wouldn't people like this mod?
Especially for that price..

Im telling you some people dont know how to express their opinions about things. and as for calling me hitler that was uncalled for as well. I dont see anything wrong with posting opinions as long as when you do you arent putting others opinions down or expressing them in such a way that it offends people. I just didnt really think it was appropriate for that to be on there and you did it all over again by calling me hitler. Now Im done with this because I see someone needs to be mature about it and end it.

How is that possible ? If one does not express themselves in the way they see fit, then that gesture is no longer self expression (or opinion in this matter) , rather it becomes a dictation of that which is socially acceptable.

Admittedly, I did not read the bulk of the thread, I just thought the comment was noteworthy.

I just meant that instead of saying something to the tune of "thats the ugliest POS I've ever seen, you should be shot" or something, people should just say "I don't like it"

Sometimes people go beyond just stating an opinion.

That is available for the 4th gens, in both styles. There is a guy in my club with the insert ($1) version. He actually caught a BIRD in it. I think if he didn't have it, the bird woulda been smashed in the radiator and possibly made a hole in it. Oh yeah, he was doin well over 100 MPH when it happened too!

I think it looks good. I just don't have a $1 to do it with.

jocww: it is easy to cut, but I dont have any fog lights in. I took them out to increase airflow.

HamSpiced: I also had the air conditioning duct ram air.. at the same time i did this mod, I took out the fog lights, changed the ram air from plastic to metal duct work and added the grille mod. I think you need the grilles in there to keep big leaves and stuff from getting in there.

Its been a while since I checked this post.....lots of back and forth, huh?

Anyway...my inserts are still in place and still look pretty neat. I just wish they could be forward a little bit more for visual reasons. Some stock grilles have those 2 little grilles that actually screw in about midway on each side.

I saw a pair on a camaro at the salvage yard and was going to pull them and use them as frame for the mesh material to go around. Would be much easier to see and prob look much better.

I'll work on it and see what I can do. I'm sure a roll of that stuff cost more than a buck:: I just bought $1.00 sections of it (like 6in x 18in).

Anyway.....glad this idea is working for most everyone.
