Wadda ya think of the tweed?
I want some opinions on some of the work I've been doing on the interior so far...So far I've tweeded the console, added cupholders to the console lid and tweeded that, radio plate, guage cluster and dash all tweeded, painted rear plastics and got 1 door panel done...Sorry for the horrible pictures, it was dark and rainy out and the interior was still in pieces, and still is now, just wanna see what you think so far...

And yes I need to fix that seam on the back of the armrest and paint the door jams, But that all comes in time!

I've never liked flames in interiors, but the chevy deal is pretty neat.
Still trying to decide about just having the door handle section and no locks/widow controls/etc. It might look a lil better if you took that block out and put some kinda darker suede handle on it. Everything else is suede, so it sticks out a little to me.

NICE job... good attention to detail.
Definitely NOT cookie cutter OR 'along the beaten path'.
I respect you for your originality... and even more for sharing w/ a fickle crowd.
Keep up the good work.

yeah I really didnt know what to do with the door handle. I knew I didnt want the whole block there with the handle mount and mirror control, I figured cutting the panel might make it look like the firebird setup so I just went ahead with it. I would really like to get the billet flamed handles they have for the minitrucking scene, but @ $149 a pair, I'll pass for now
::Edit:: Also that black panel doesnt stick out as bad when you look at the rest of the interior. I have alot of tweed w/ black plastic contrast going on.

I liked tweed back in the mid 90s. Now I find it dated. But... other than your arm rest it looks like you did a great job.

Though I can appreciate the hard work that can go into such a project, I've never liked tweed. To me, it just looks cheap inside a car. Nice touch with the flame and chevy symbol though. Any pics of the center console???

looks cheap. I might look better if the arm rest if u wanna call it that wasnt covered. Im not sure what its called. Also the chevy symbol staying black plastic also would make it look alot cleaner. It looks a bit cheesy especially with the seems and all around the arm rest. But good work anyway.

It sure looks a lot better than some of the ratty interiors I've seen on other cars.
The rough tweed works well and the grey is a good base color, but the design needs broken up into horizontal shapes of a darker color, perhaps trimmed with a vinyl or leather.
Recommend keeping the arm rest, top of the door plastic piece and dash pad black and not covered with the same tweed material, these need a semi-gloss, leatherette surface.

Well you can't see it in the picture but the top piece and the arm rest are both almost black in color, I dyed them to break up the grey tweed. And it really looks alot different in person, these pictures do it no justice. It fits fairly well with the rest of the interior. But I like hearing opinions both ways! keep em coming!

Here is a picture of the console, the picture looks absolutly horrid but its the best I could do to show one of the 2 cupholders...Seriously my interior does not look as bad as it does in these pictures...

Those cupholders hold bottles really good and tight and do really well on cups too, plus the cups are held in with epoxy so they arent going anywhere!! Plus tweed cleans pretty easily, same as cleaning carpet.

Well I said I was open to all opinions so I was sure I'd get some of that. I personally love the way tweed looks, I think it can look very clean. And what was I thinking? I was thinking, *** I hate this ratty dark red interior... I guess I've been in the minitruck scene too long helping my younger brother, but I love custom stuff like that! Even though there is probably cheaper options then spending $107 on 7 yards of tweed and $75 on adhesive, Im still happy with my choice. Its better then putting carpet or the such on the door panels...

The longest part of the cupholders was cutting out the 2 holes in the hard plastic with the dremel. I cut the top vinyl and foam with a razor knife and then cut out the plastic with a dremel. Then covered with tweed and let it set up. then cut the holes and folded the tweed into the holes. then took the cups and epoxied them from the backside and reinstalled...Prolly less then an hour for the whole thing.

I think the tweed is an okay material to use, but i also think the door panels could use some more contrast. I think if the handles and top trim piece were kept as black plastic, it would look better. They just don't seem like pieces that benefit from being recovered. For the door handle trim, you could use a firebird piece with the pointed design. They are on my GTA panels, but i know they came on some other birds too. probably the later ones.
The center console looks alright but i think it'd be better if the cup holder were on the flat part behind the shifter, and if the lid were left stock. It'd add more contrast and I have to think the lid is a tough place to grab a drink with your right hand. plus you wouldn't lose use of the arm rest when you have a drink. I definitely like the chevy emblem and flames though.

Also, one of my biggest reasons for recovering the top panel and armrest is..The top peice had gashes in it and looked bad and the armrest was coming apart...If it wasnt for that I prolly would've let them be...Im open for other opinions on what to do...Any other ideas for the armrest/ mouting plate?

I know that the top trim pieces are hard to find in good shape. I have one or two extra pairs of black arm rests that are in about as perfect condition as you can ask for with no separating. I'll sell em to you for $10 for the pair plus shipping. It doesn't look like it'll be easy to clean up that seam and I'd imagine the tweed would get very dirty very fast on the handle like that. PM me if you're interested

Since this picture i swapped over to manual windows and locks, so now the panel has the window crank and a block off plate where the power lock buttons are.

Please get black or gray seats now!
I don't care for it... the door panel looks okay except for the arm rest, but the center console looks kinda rushed. I think the Chevy symbol is a little short n' stubby too.
Could you get a farther back picture that shows most of the interior?

Daves is very clean and neat, but I think it looks a little boring...Very good job though, I typically dont like carpet on any area other then boxes and floor, but it looks good...I got the other side done and did the armrest darker and without the messed up seam. Question...someone recomended something about leatherette...is it water resistant? I am thinking about doing the top panel and armrest in leatherette or vinyl now...But not the factory styled vinyl, wrapped cleanly with no texture etc.

And the red seats....My parents got them recovered last year for my 18th birthday so they'd raise hell if I sold them right now, Once I get to Wyotech next year I'll prolly sell em and get some 4th gens or racing seats along with a nice 4 point harness setup...It doesnt clash as awful as I thought it would because all 4 seats match...But it will change soon enough!!

Its my daily driver. The dash was just test fitted in those pictures...I have since cut those out and fixed the messed up corner of the dash...But I did drive it one night like that and it poured rain and my blower motor died too...Fun stuff lol

Dave, that is EXACTLY what i had envisioned. either I unconsiously thought of yours or we have similar tastes :-). Actually I don't know if you remembered but I followed through on removing the bottles from the inner fenders and had them smoothed out when my engine compartment was repainted. I was thinking of doing the same thing! Except instead of tweed, I was gonna use fur.
J/K
I think the tweed looks ok, but ya definitely need a little more contrast. I would not have covered the plastic on the top of the door, myself.

Lighter weight, why else? So you can fit speakers in the doors; but its for lighter weight.
Personally, I think those are too bland. Maybe its because I'm young and therefore attracted to more "busy" or "flashy" type items, but I don't like them. They need more contrast, more design to them. Props for the effort though, at least it doesn't look half-assed.

It's maybe a little too clean for me, though.
