rust along metal piece around hatch window, how to get rid of it?
you know that piece of metal around the hatch window? mine is pretty rusted and was wondering whats the best way to get rid of it. sand it down and use silver paint?

Mine is starting to rust in that spot too. My car is red and that metal trim is black. Someone told me to put wax on it to stop it from getting worse, but I don't think that really works. I would sand it and paint it.

When I repainted my car I painted that along with the strips on the t tops. I sanded them down and shot them with a satin black. They came out great. Oh yeah and it was rattle can.

Ive looked into this and you can buy that piece new but its not cheap. I was looking into replacing my whole hatch(mine was smashed and I have the wrong year on there) went to do so and last minute was told that piece wasnt included but would be for another $100 or so more. I held off for now...

I just did mine plus the door handles a couple of weeks ago, looks 10x better now All I did was take a scotch bright pad to the metal trim and beedblasted the handles.

i sanded mine down and painted it with satin black, looked great for 4 years....i need to do it again as it's starting to rust in a few spots. very minor but i'm too picky.
has anyone painted it to match the car?
i've been contemplating the idea to paint mine to match my car...

Liberal amounts of Naval Jelly, just dont get it on the roof!
A little sand paper to roughen up the surface
A little primer if you want
Black trim paint available at any auto parts store

just lightly sand the piece and attend to any rust with an inhibitor. then paint. no need to go extreme and acid dip the piece... :lala:

I just dont see why somebody would paint over a spot where rust is/was without totally getting rid of it. It WILL come back up through the paint if it's anything like most rust I've seen
Ahhh, whatever works

lighten up.........just pulling your chain, that's true that you'll definately take care of it that way. my point was that if you do it right with certain inhibitor products you shouldn't have to go that far.
doesn't matter as they both work well.

Would it look like *** if you painted it with a brush? If not, what kind of paint would you use? I'm not a very artistic person, so I fear I'd have a lot of overspray if I attacked it with a spray can. It seems like it would be tricky to mask too since it's such a narrow little piece that goes around such a large area of curved glass

If you are an artist, it would not look bad. I don't know how to paint well with a brush because I always leave brush strokes. An artist can use a brush and have it look like an airbrush.
If are using a spray can, just mask the areas that you don't want overspray on.

when i re-did mine, i did what everyone else did...sanded it with some emery cloth and then painted it with flat black spray paint.
when my hatch got smashed i priced those trim pieces from GM...it comes in 2 pieces, one for each side, and you wont believe how much it is new from GM....try $450 APIECE...for a total of $900 plus another $478 for the glass from GM.

I was quoted $450 or so for new glass w/ rear defrost and new trim. The glass was $350 or so and I was going to do it but I didnt realize the trim was seperate and another $100 so I held off for now. Later on tho if I cant find quality used glass then Ill bite the bullet and get new glass, new trim and Ill have it retinted and that will be one less thing to fix on the car.
