cutoff consequences???

i have a 91 z28 i cutoff all the piping just before the cats and welded a flowmaster chamber on there so it dumps off just under the passenger seat i was told by a family member that in doing so i would burn my exhaust valves..i was wondering if this it true and if there were any other drawbacks..my car sounds good but wanna make sure im not damaging my motor any advise would be welcome

From what ive been told.... when you do turn you car off if cold air gets back through your exhaust and to your hot motor your valves may get warped/bent. if im wrong guys, you can do this to me! i would like to know if this is even close to being true myself.

SLAP!

you're wrong.

no, as long as you have some kind of headers or exhaust manifolds, you dont have anything to worry about...

sounds like your engine will be fine. but that won't be an issue after you die from carbon monoxide poisioning. all your exhaust is going to creep into your cab and your going to be sucking on exhaust fumes everytime your sitting at a red light or in a drive thru! This is a huge health risk! Hence the reason no car manufacturer has EVER produced a car that dumped it's exhaust directly under the cab!

before he says it, i will.

you cant smell carbon monoxide.

its like oxygen. your body obsorbs it into the bloodstream like it is oxygen. but its not. your body cant use it... and so as you breathe more and more of it, it takes the place of oxygen in more and more of your blood.

you'll start to feel slightly lightheaded.... your lips and/or fingertips may or maynot tingle a bit.. depending on how sensitive they are.

you feel sleepy... sometimes slightly sick. but it goes away after you get out of the car for a bit.

lots of car guys get it.. actually anyone with a exhaust leak can... alot dont know why, what it is, or whats happening... heck, most dont think about it.

it CAN cause brain damage, and it CAN kill you.. both from lack of oxygen.. its like drowning.

its usually worse in the wintertime since people have the windows up and the heater taking the air from the floor and blowing it around... and in some parts of the country, snow and ice really make it sealed in...

but with some common sence, and atleast the knowlage of whats happening, you can stop it... if you feel any of thoes thigns, crack the window, breath some fresh air, and if you can, pull over, walk away from the car, and take a break. remember, you cant feel it killing brain cells, and you cant taste or know its there until theres already enough to effect you.

A "gas mask" won't do anything about CO.

As to the original burnt exhaust valve question - it can happen, especially with short pipes that point upward. But, exhaust manifolds retain a lot of heat and will heat any cold air that flows up-hill (did you pick up on the irony there?). It's quick, uneven cooling of an open exhaust valve that has been known to cause problems. Your setup won't cause valve problems.

But the CO issue is very real.

It comes up from time to time. The last time was probably before you registered.

A lot of the questions asked on these forums (certainly not just the Exhaust forum) could have been anwered if the originator had just done a search. Sometimes when we're surfing the forums, we aren't in the best of mind, either (I know I've certainly gotten much, much too terse with people on more than one occasion ).

But, the basic purpose of the Board is to share tech information about GM 3rd gen f-bodies. So, we'll just keep on techin'...

almost any related automotive myth you can think of was brought up at one time or another on these boards..

want to know somthing funny?

my bike is a Vtwin and has a really deep exhaust tone to it.

so when i idle or near idle down the rows in a parking lot, its at JUST the right tone to set off most car alarms.. lol. i dont even have to try, if i cruise by too close... *honk-honk-honk* alarm goes off. even factory ones. :lala:
