Already wrecked the Z!

Three months and already wrecked the Z. I was on my way home on Halloween night and got caught up in a heavy downpour. I hit a big patch of standing water, spun around twice, crossed three lanes, and kissed the concrete wall median, then spun one more time before the car came to rest. I was lucky no one was around me; it was 5am. I was also lucky I didn't damage more than what I did. I was sliding parrallel with the wall. When the car did the second 360, the front swung around and hit the wall. Here are some pics.

I spent my two days off work and pulled the front end off. The metal bumper behind the face was twisted. You can see it pushing out the bottom side of the driver side headlight pocket.Where it attaches to the driver's side frame rail was wrinkled a bit. Didn't look too bad. I took a heat gun and straightened out the fascia, so now all it has are the scrapes and a tear on the dr side. I had to pull the metal bumper/face support(?) off so the fascia would fit back on right. Anyway, anyone know of a company for a good new fascia? Year One? Also, my idle is high now since I hit the wall. I posted a thread in more detail in the general tech and tpi forum if anyone is interested and has any ideas on what the problem may be. Thanks.

True. I have one laying around from my RS, but I thought about it and I plan on doing a lot to this car and thought I might as well replace it with new parts that are perfect so that it comes out as nice as it can when I paint it.

It cost me $560 to have my front end repainted and all new parts installed.

New lower facia $245.00
New bumber Cover $237.00
Emblem $22.00
Grill $56.00
marker lights $100.00 Pair
Fog Lights $ 200.00

If you order it from a dealer tell them to get you a 15% discount on all this stuff.

Expensive , but you wanna do it right an be done with it. Damm I wish I would have saved my old bumper cover that was used and in ok shape it was red too. I would have sold it to you real cheap.

I know your pain... I wrecked mine on the way to the Super Chevy Show this year at Indy less than 2 miles from the show. I checked my estimate and the body shop got me a GM front cover for $283, which is not much more than most aftermarket covers I've seen. Good luck on the rebuild.

There is a vacuum reserve ball right under where you hit, I bet the line is broken or the ball is cracked and that is what is causing the high idle. Hope this helps!

sorry to hear about the car but do yourself a favor and buy a NEW cover. Do not buy some used cover. Chances are it is dry rotted or half way there. And besides that, most used covers have slight warping to them. Its not even worth it to have a body shop strip and rework a used cover when you can buy a new one. Did you file a claim with your insuance company. If not then dont, you will only get surchanrged for the accident. If you already did, them tell them you want a check to repair the car. buy al the parts and instal them yourself. then just take it some where to have it painted. the moiney you saved in labor to fix it can go towards NEW parts

Wheels are fine. Tires are ok also. Guess they just look bad in the picture.

Yea.I'm only installing brand new parts on the car. I don't see any point replacing it with used parts (especially the cover which are almost always warped if they're used) when I am planning on shooting the whole car with custom paint.

Is it possible to get something to fill the nose cover in the middle so it doesn't flex before you install it? I've always hated how it gets concave over time from the wind resistance. You could probably save yourself a future eyesore there.

I am actually going to fiberglass some metal brackets to the backside of the new nose to keep it from flexing and warping over time. I hate the way the middle starts to "sag".

You call that wrecked? Looks like the fenders are untouched. To make it look like it did would be a few hundred. Sorry to hear that but it could have been MUCH worse. Good luck and post pics when you're done.

Yeah. I realize I was very fortunate considering the circumstances (spinning three complete times across three lanes of highway). Lucky indeed. Just sucks that it happened. I have a lot of plans for the car, and I was pretty bummed out when it happened. But, it's just a minor set back, that's all. Guess I'm getting the car painted sooner than originally planned

Funny you say that

I recently crashed my formula right before I was going to get an LS1 TA WS6 but because of how much I would have to pay for insurance I decided to fix and customize the formy. In the last month I've been walking to work and spent over 5K in repairs to make the car the way I want it and I'm happier for it. Good Luck RSpeed

Sorry to hear about the car man, but we're all glad you're ok. Definitely just go for a new front bumper or you'll be replacing it again way too soon.
BOTTLEDZr28:
Your car is exactly how I want mine, only white and as a trans am. Do you have any track times because all the motor/trans/rear axle work you did are my plans too.

no i didnt put it on the frame puller because that damage wasnt to bad... mostly it just pushed the drivers side headlight pocket part of the radiater support back about 5 inches.... so a buddy and me in about 4 hours had it all pretty much straight again

... lol we took a toe strap and hooked it to the support then the other end to a polaris ranger and i had him give the polaris ranger light amounts of gas till it pulled the support back out to just about straight.... im pretty sure that i have everything straight enouph so when i get a new nose , headlight bar, hood, and drivers side fender that no one will ever no unless they look closely under the hood....

hey if any one has any of the folowing please email me asap...

4 inch cowl induction hood

85 -92 z28/iroc-z nose (with headlight bar and lights) (and mounting hardware)

drivers side fender

radiater shroud and fan assembly

if any one has any of that for sale email me asap at

trizbrian@yahoo.com

Thanks. I feel MUCH better now after seeing the end result of your crunched up car Your car looks very nice now.

911rsq: I heated the nose with my heatgun and played with it, so it's pretty straight now. Just scapes in the paint. It looks alot better than it did. I'll post pics when I get a chance. I haven't taken any yet. I still have to straighten the part where the bumper attaches to and get a new fiberglass headlight brace and bumper. But I got it looking good enough to where I can live with it till I get the car repainted.

I'm getting a new nose and pass side fender. I have another chin spoiler from my 91 RS that is almost new. And I'll probably end up getting another SS hood. The SS hood from my RS is gone. But I think I may end up waiting to paint it till I get the 383 finished.
