I was wondering if anybody out there knows where to get aftermarket brackets to bolt on PBR rear calipers (89+) to my 9 bolt rear. I saw the part #'s on the article (how to upgrade your brakes) called GM and they have been discontinued. I have a friend with an 89 GTA I just can't convince him to let me pull the axleshafts out of his car so I can fab new ones.
Any Ideas??

I've been thinking of getting a set of those made, too but I can't get my hands on one to make a template. The only other option I have is to try and locate a '89 rear, which is getting kinda hard.

I think it would be a great thing to have these made, then they could be put on any old 9 bolt.

I'd be more than happy to look into getting these made if I could get my hands on one backing plate.

if you would have ask me 2 weeks ago id say no problem, but after having them laying around for 1 yeay i installed em, they look easy to make tho, you can probably use the old plates from the gm calipers to get most of the measurements.

So whats the deal, does Baer sell the brackets seperatly. I mean they are like 30 min from min from my house. I'd love to buy the baer kit, I just don't have the $750. I know I'm being cheap, I can't help it!

We never tryed to asked! We got our kit from Thunder Racing!
Go ahead and take that 30 min .....maybe you are lucky and they sell single parts!
The brackets do have a Baer number!

If not try to get some a junkyard or friend and take them to a cnc shop next to ya and asked for a "copy"!

If this is again too much make a copy of it in your next mall or copyshop and send ya gal/wife out to the cinema and file and cut one in the basement/garage!

Its not easy for everyone to do but working in a craft shop etc should make things easy!

I finally heard back from Baer on the plates. Here's what they said:

"Ed I can sell you just the brkts but they are $150.00 each. The complete rear system for that rear end is $735.00. If you have any questions please call."

The big 1LE type rear brakes do not have dust shields. Mine don't anyway.

Andy on my both my 9 bolts, w/PBR rear Calipers, they have dust shields. still let us know what's up with the brackets that you are making.

 

I just wemt outside and checked mine. They do not have shields.

Even if they did I would not install them. None of my "PBR" 10 bolts have shields.

I mean really...$150 for a metal plate with holes in it? All they did to get the spacing right was weld a pair of washers to the plate. We can do this for under $50 each, I'm sure.

By the way, my "new' 9 bolt has the dust shields, too. I kept bending them when I was moving it around. I could care less if they had them or not.

Sounds like Baer's "polite" way of saying we don't want to sell the brackets separately. Why should they. They'd rather sell the whole $735 kit

They have a niche market and they know it.

 

I have a 10 bolt drum-to-disc conversion ready now. It is better than the original 3rd gen setup. Easy to install,and includes everything including parking brake cables.

I picked up another '89 9 bolt housing yesterday, a bit rusty from sitting but it's ok. It does NOT have dust shields on it, and the backing plates look quite a bit different from the ones on the rear I just installed. I'll get some shots tonight. These have a curve on the outside edge, curving inward toward the pumpkin. My other plates are totally flat, with the shields tack welded to the outside edge. No doubt they'll work, but why the difference?? I dunno...

 

im pretty sure the backing plates for the 10 bolt are still avalable through gm. Wouldnt it be possable to just drill new holes to match up with the flange on the 9 bolt?? The baer kit look to have both sets drilled in it, so i can not see a problem with that.

 

I was told the same thing, that the 10 bolt plates are still available and that they fit by elongating the holes just a tad.

Well........... I decided that the original 3rdgen rear disc brake setup was kinda cheezy from the start. So (jump in any time you want Ed) I came up with what I think is a much better idea. Much stronger, easier to install, and user friendly. Fits any 10 bolt rear. I am currently doing some design work on the 9 bolt setup.

It will all be on my "CD".

Just to let you know, I just installed AndyZ28's disc brake conversion, ('83 T/A, rear drums stock) and it is AWESOME!!! I left a post on the review board, but it didn't get much looking at, I guess.

Everything I need was in the box, tech support was superb, and quality of the components was top notch!! Well worth doing the job!!

I've never liked the way my '88 GTA stopped with the J65 rear brakes so right now i'm doing a whole conversion over to the later type rear brakes. I don't know what i'm doing with the fronts but if some 1le parts surface i'll go that route because i can get rebuilt 1le calipers from work for about $45. My car came with a 3.27 9-bolt so i was in the same boat as you guys. Well today i cruised over to this boneyard that specializes in GM muscle/sports cars and they had a few 9 bolt disc rear-ends, one was an '89 and i nabbed the backing plates off them, but i had to surrender my left nut for them ($35 each......these are greasy junkyard parts folks). *(&* that. Tomorrow i'm going to call a few metal fabricators in the area and see if i can get some copies made before i throw these puppies on there. I'll keep everyone posted if some become available.

 

I know a guy who has a set of the Guldstrand brackets he'll part with if anyone wants them.

Does anyone have or can anyone make the rear mounting bracket to put the 1LE calipers on a 9-bolt? Or, can someon send me a detailed draft of the part? I have access to a full machine shop at my work and could make a few sets if someone gave me a template or an original.

 

Kevosiroc, I've got an '89 9 bolt sitting at the house with disc plates on it. I don't really understand what you're asking...are you wanting to make them yourself? Andy gets mine first but you're welcome to them after he gets done. If Andy needs just one I'll gladly send you the other one.

I am looking to replace the 10-bolt in my '92 B4C with a 9-bolt. I need the brackets for the 1LE calipers to go on the 9-bolt. If no one has a set or made duplicates they are willing to sell to me, I will make them in my machine shop. I would rather not take the time to make them and just buy them. Now, if I have to make them, I will make a few sets if people are interested. But overall, I would rather just buy a pair (but not for $150 a piece from Baer).

I am currently working very hard to have these reproduced. I am looking at an initial production run of 40-50 sets. I am encountering some metalurgical, and plating issues. But I should be able to get it done in the end.

I will probably announce a pre-pay sale as I near the production date.

Where do we stand with these brackets? I am really getting backed up with my project at this point. I do not mean to sound pushy, but if I had a template I could make a few sets in my machine shop.

 

They are currently at the fabricators. But it is not a simple matter of "burning a few out". The sample brakets I received have an offset built into them.

We are currently working on a cost effective way to overcome this problem.
