Clunk Noise, Tranny mount #3 (tomp and others)
Hey, I need to know if any other year camaros have a better cross bar (the one that goes between the two sets of rubber bushings) then this flat one. I am a draftsman and in my book thats a :nono: So is their a formed one that will work?? Also buy looks is that a reg rubber mount, or a poly one. I forgot to check while I was under their

Do you mind if I edit your pic to show you something? If you do, let me know, I'll remove it, and email it to you.
My '86, and earlier cars, are missing that secondary bracket. Our center bolt goes right to the crossmember. Now, supposedly, (I assume on V8 cars) the center bolt was cracking the hole in the crossmember. So GM came up with this design, which gives the trans two holes in the crossmember to grab onto. And from what I've seen, there's no center hole in the crossmember- just a center "oval" that is a couple inches wide.
You could buy a 4 foot piece of strip steel (Home Depot, hardware aisle), 1/8" or 3/16" thick. Bolt the steel to the crossmember using the secondary mount holes. Drill a hole in the center of that strip, and bolt the trans mount to it via the center.

Na, I dont mind you modifying the pic. If I did I would have stated. So I would have to put a longer center bolt in it, to a new "crossmember" that I "make". I dont see how that would really work, to me it would warp the bolt over time. I was thinking either weld "flanges" down the sides of it, or get some box tubing to run down underneith to stiffin it up, along with that es poly mount. Didnt I read somewhere you said it slightly lowers the tranny also?? Then couldn't I bend the cat bracket to prevent it from hitting bottom of floor?

Yea, here it is, on my other post about this, from you...
Again, buy the ES poly torque arm mount; a pain in the butt to put on, and you have to lower the trans tailshaft a bit, but it really improves the car's handling! It totally eliminates the "wiggle" in the car's rear that happens during sharp turns! I did one when I replaced the last transmission.

How much will it lower it??? Enough to bring my cat, and cat bracket down?? Just from the mount?? Think that should be enough to keep the cat from getting pulled up under tourqe??

Oh wait a sec, that's a torque arm mount I was talking about! You'd have to lower the tranny tailshaft to get the torque arm mount in. It's the rearmost bracket off the tailshaft of the the transmission, passenger side. 'Fact, I think it also holds the catatlyic convertor. But the only way to get the torque arm mount bushing out is to lower the trans tailshaft (by removing the crossmember, with a piece of wood between the trans pan and a floorjack)... when you're done, you'd raise the trans back up and put the crossmember back.
What I was saying is that you wouldn't need a longer bolt, you'd eliminate that middle mount altogether. Or if you find an x-member from an 82-86 car with the center bolt hole (and not a large oval), you could put that crossmember on the car instead.
The biggest problem right now is that the cat convertor bracket hits the floor, right? If you can bend the bracket, I'd say to go for it!

Damn I'm a dumb a$$!!! Ok, so bend the cat bracket, and put a es mount in their. I should have the cash to attempt that this long weekend. And if I still dont like it, look for an x-member from 82-86 at my local u-pull-it parts place. Maybe I can go jack the one off the guys car down the road, it hasnt moved in a while, wonder if he will miss it
. Ok, I will give this a try. Also, the dynomax catback system I got, the damn flange that goes to the cat was installed backwords. I had to cut it off, turn it over, and weld it back on. So I am guessing I have a loose joint their. but cant do anything else about that tell it gets insurance and plates
Thanks for the info, even though I feel so stupid now. Supreme Member

LOL! The guy might sell the car like that (no crossmember)!
The flange was backwards? the flat side was facing the rear of the car? Damn, that sucks. Let us know how it goes!

woohoo, I think I found the problem. I went and got the es mount, swapped some bad plug wires for them, got 5 bux and a tranny mount, what a deal!!! But while disassembling it, I noticed that the "washer" on the top that was to "hold" the horizontal(hzb) bad down, wasnt really holding it. IT was to small. While I had the hzb down I noticed that their was a large ring the same size as the biskits. hum, the freaking hzb is to go BETWEEN the two biskits, not on top of them. So in theroy the tranny was just laying in their, and spaced up the extra thickness of the biskit!!!!! No wonder something was banging!!!!! Gonna take it for a test drive tommorow. It was dark when I finished it, and no plates, dark, and no insurance just dont fly for me. Keep the fingers crossed!!!
