RPM Questions
JSU,
I'm guesing that this is regarding your newly acquired '86, right?
If so, I wouldn't be too concerned about the idle and vibrations until you get a fresh load of fuel into it. Old, stale fuel and carburetors (or injectors, for that matter) don't get along. You should also solve teh smoke/steam issue. But before you do that, scan the ECM for error codes and find out what those problems are. That may solve several of your issues.

no the new battery is the only battery i have tried...
i am sorry about that last post what i meant to say was that
if i let it idle for about fifteen seconds and then give it alot of gas it will rev up untill 1500rpm... then stop.... then rev on up.. is this normal

Your alternator opeartes only above 650 rpm if it has not got Underdrive pulleys on it.. so your idle borders this in most cars.. Dont worry its normal... Your Fuel injection system ( Im guessing you have TBI/TPI ) will hunt for an idle Correction if the Idle Air control Valve is sticky.. or if something else is out calibration ( minimum IDle set screw, Tps sensor too Low, Idle too low ) The Idle Air Control Valve Steps upward to allow your air intake more air then your butterfly so that when you press the accelerator peddle down under load and lift off you dont stall the engine suddenly.. Carberators have a Idle assist valve for High-Idle and Stalling purposes aswell... You seem to have nothing to really be concerned about.. They are all easy to Tune up...
Hrock,
Excellent breakdown. If it helps, he acknowledged in a previous thread that the car is equipped with a carburetor (LG4 engine). We've been trying to get the initial start of the engine after its having been adandoned for an undetermined amount of time. The car has several issues, but it appears that to this point the battery is new and the engine will now run for short intervals with some throttle feathering.
With all the seemingly unrealted threads on this set of problems, it may be time to clean it all up and summarize it into one post, so the issues are easier to track and potentially related problems can be put into perspective. Analysis will certainly be more complete that way, or we can at least separate the issues into the appropriate, relevant systems.
