What kind of differential is this?

I pulled this differential out of my 89 camaro. It has rear disk rotors and supposably has 323 gears. The papers for my car says the rear is from a 90 z28 but its not a 10 bolt? It's an 8-bolt??? Im really confused. It says its a POSi and I think it is since I leave 2 tracks when I burn out.

I need a new differential, any good places where I can find a direct replacement for this?

A greasy carrier isn't going to help me much.

You must have removed the cover, so how many bolts were holding it on? How many splines are on the axle drive gears? Was there a rubber plug in the rear cover? Are there "C" clips holding the rear axles in place? Did you get the numbers stamped in the front of the right axle tube? How many teeth are on the pinion? The ring?

there were 9 bolts holding the cover on. there are 36 teeth on the ring, not sure about the pinion. yes there is a rubber plug on the rear cover. yes theres 1 C clip on each side of the carrier holding it in place.

"How many splines are on the axle drive gears?" Is that the # of teeth at the end of the axle???

"Did you get the numbers stamped in the front of the right axle tube?" Is this on the passangers side on the outside of the rear?

anymore help is greatly appreciated!

It's a borg warner 7.75" 9 bolt. Everything you need for a 9 bolt is at www.9bolt.com

I'm just guessing here, but I think he meant that there are bearing caps ('C'-shaped) on each carrier support bearing, as almost all axles have. Initially, I was asking about the axle retaining clips inside the differential side gears.

Seems like we've already determined it is a Borg axle, making it well worth repairing. 36 teeth on the ring gear would make it a 2.77 ratio - just a common gear ratio on ThirdGen Borg axles. 38 teeth are usually found on a 3.45. 36/13, 36/11, and 38/11 were available. I think the aftermarket has more possibilities.

sorry, im a newbie when it comes to this kind of stuff, I pulled this all apart on my own. I don't know how to replace anything on the inside of the diff, pulling off the ring gear was as far as I went, but I can tell the teeth on the inside of it are torn up.

The C clips I was talking about are the ones that go over the bearing on each side to hold it in place, sorry to confuse you.

I've called up one place and the guy said it would be around $600 to rebuild!!!!! what a rip! I'll still try other places tomorrow.

is there anywhere else online I could get a new differential like this besides the ones already posted? I'd hate to go through all the trouble of replacing the whole rearend. I don't want to order something that wont fit either. I've seen diff's for 12 bolts that are $100, why arent they for the one I have??

sorry for all the stupid questions but this is all new to me!

thx for all u that have helped me!

"36 teeth on the ring gear would make it a 2.77 ratio"

are you sure about this? I thought I had 3.23 gears in it, but I guess not now??

I really need help guys, what exactly do I need to order. I see different kinds of differentials but Im not sure exactly would be a direct replacement. All I need to do is order a new one(or used), put the ring gear back on it and bolt it back in and my car is working again!

Look for the ratio stamped into the side of the ring gear. 3.23 to 4.10 is a series 3 carrier. I couldn't tell for sure from the pictures, but is looks like a series 3 carrier. Do you have any pics from the side?

I have brand new series 3 posi carriers for $445. More info is at www.9bolt.com

When it comes to 9 bolt parts your SOL. its either GM or Miles. The 9 bolt is rare and obscure making it expensive to deal with. They only appeared in some later 3rd gens nut they are strong.

to get your axel ratio:

count the teeth on the ring gear, then count the teeth on the pinion gear ( the one sticking through the front of the housing) divide the number of ring gear teeth by the number of pinion gear teeth. Use a calculator, thats your ratio.
