Photoshop question: changing to/from black

Every time I try to make a car black or change something that is black to another color it all ends up grey. How do you do this the right way?
Do I have to use some sort of filter or something?

Man I wish I could tell you how exactly but I can never remember how I do it, I always have to fool around for like 10-15 mins before I get it working right, but I know I play around with the Saturation, the brightness/contrast, and the color balance to change it from black to a color, and to change a color to black you need to make a copy of it as a new layer then you might have to change the color of the car first with the Hue, usually you can just go to eiter end of the scale then turn off one or two colors in the blending options of that layer

Hope this helps, any more Q's just ask
