Long tube headers 92 trans am 5spd
Has anybody put a set of long tube headers on their thirdgen with a 5 spd? I have heard that it can not be done, and that I will need a set of shorties.

I am assuming that it would have something to do with the clutch fork and the tranny being different. I also heard that shortie headers will only give you about 1/3 to half the HP gain that long tubes will. So if I can go with long tubes or mid length, I would prefer to do that.

Sure it can be done. Hedman makes a set of long tubes for 3rdgen cars for about $110. It can be done, its just that ground clearance can be an issue because they dip down pretty low.
The Hedman's won't fit with a 5 speed, unless you bend the collector down about 3/4 of an inch. My neighbor heated my set up with a torch and bent the collector downward to clear the part of the bellhousing that mounts the slave cylinder for the clutch. It can be done though, it just requires a lot of effort.

So all you have to do is bend the collector down? Are there any other modifications you have to make? I'm planning on going with the hedman longtubes this summer to replace my hooker shorties when I build my 406.

Ok, cool. Can I use the Moroso S pipes on them or will it have to be custom bent? I don't know of anyone in Indy that will custom mandrel bend pipe.
I can't say with any certainty that the s-pipes will fit. I think someone used them however. It looks like they hang pretty low in the picture, but anything that you have bent will be low underneath the crossmemeber. To solve this, I'm in the process of building a double hump crossmember to gain some ground clearance.

I'm running duals with hooker shorties right now and I have really low clearance. I'm hoping I can gain a little when I switch to longtubes and chambered mufflers from Stainless Steel Works. I might look into building a custom crossmember. Between my grandpa, dad and me we're pretty good at fabricating stuff like that. Is there any certain metal I should use for it? I've seen somebody's where he made it all out of like 1" square tubing or something like that.
Check out www.crossmembers.com, and that's something like what I'm building. I have pics of someone that modified the stock x-member, which I'm also considering using pieces of. I believe G-force is using 2x3 1/8" wall box tubing for the center section and 1/2" plate steel for everything else. It seems very heavy duty, and somewhat of a pain to make unless you have the correct tools, but obviously it can take any abuse you might throw at it, plus gain some ground clearance.
