Who uses Mobil 1 Tranny Fluid?

I was just wondering how many use Mobil 1 tranny fluid. I'm getting a used tranny put in, and I decided to use the good stuff.
But man, at $5 a qt and 10 qts it was a bit pricey.

Has anyone had any long term experience with it?

Oh crap, just did a search, and I should have asked this before I bought it.

I hope my tranny will hold up for at least a few thousand miles

How can a company make the top 1-2 motor oil, but they're tranny fluid suck

I used Mobil-1 ATF for two years when I had a TH700 trans, no complaints here and I beat the snot out of it at Memphis Motorsports Park roadcourse. Wasn't even discolored when I drained it. By way of comparison, I totally burned up the next fill of Amsoil ATF after only two sessions at Pocono (shorter course w/ fewer turns, cooler weather). TCC was chattering slightly, had it flushed out w/ Mobil-1, no more chatter and two more Pocono events before I swapped in the T56 trans.

Not sure I'd use all the data you collected here on thirdgen.org as empirical evidence...there are people here that really shouldn't be allowed to work on their cars, and when there's a failure of course it has to be the parts' fault.

Thanks, however, one such opinion came from Pro-Built, but he said that was a few yrs ago when he saw it wasn't good. And he said maybe their quality has changed, I sure hope so.

Thats pretty good evidence there. I'm seriously thinking of using the mobil 1 atf in my tranny.

i used b&m trickshift in my tranny before. seemed to work very nice. i dogged the hell out of the tranny, but it was rebuilt once.

I don't like the idea of using a tranny fluid with no friction modifiers. That fluid is designed to firm up shifts, but I think in the long run it would do damage. Mobil 1 seems to provide a descent amount of protection and help the tranny last longer.

I have used the Mobil ATF for over 5 years in both my powerglide and my t-350. Both transmissions were 10 second street driven transmissions and never had a fliud related issue. I finally fragged the sprag in the t-350 and upon teardown I could still read the names on some of the clutches.

Now, maybe there is an issue with the 700r-4's I do not know about, but I am not about to change fliuds any time soon!

I have been running Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in my 92 Z for a long time now and it still shifts hard with a 152,000 miles on it and I know I have over 100 passes down the drag strip.

I suspect there's something missing from this story. I've been using AMSOIL ATF since 1983, and have never burnt the fluid in anything I've had it in. Nor any chatter.

I've had high-mileage trannies that wore out after AMSOIL was put in, but no problems after replacement of the (already) worn parts.

How many laps under racing conditions have you put on yours?

Not that panty-waist drag racing stuff either, we're talking 20-30 min continuous WOT/brake/WOT/brake/WOT cycles.

Running around in continuous circles for no apparent reason, ending up where you started? No, haven't done that.

But, you aren't the only one out there who has. Which fluid were you using? (They've had more than one type over the years.)

I have done continuous towing including up & down hills w/frequent shifts, stop & go, etc. Also had slipping clutches, no TCC lockup, no tranny cooler. None of these burnt the AMSOIL ATF.

It was Amsoil ATF purchased in 2000, label said "Universal ATF" or some such. I'm still using the remnants in my power steering and no probs w/ boil-over or pressure loss (foaming).

The Amsoil came out dark orange, as opposed to the cherry red it was when it went in.

Lots of variables I agree, just one data point in my case where I burned up Amsoil under conditions the Mobil-1 ATF endured doesn't make for a scientifically-valid conclusion.

I still use Amsoil engine oil and wouldn't consider anything else available at this time. 10W-30 off season and 15W-40 on track.

Sounds like the right stuff. An oil analysis would have been interesting.

I'm using the SuperShift in the TH400. I ran it last season, drained pan-only this spring (i.e., didn't flush the converter), came out the same bright red.

The original TH400 configuration engaged 3rd before 2nd disengaged for a smoother shift. This burnt out both the band and clutch pack. When I drained it for the rebuild, the AMSOIL ATF was still red, but there was a bunch of blackened friction material dust on the bottom of the pan (none of that stuff since the shift kit, which eliminated the 2-3 "smooth" feature, and the rebuild).

I have a racer buddy who went through 4 trannies in the last part of 2001 and first part of 2002. He'd always used Mobil 1 ATF before, although I don't know if he is still using it since he stopped having failures. I'll have to ask him.

I use Castrol syntec ATF in my T-56 (6-speed). It's good stuff!
