How many miles did your original tranny last???
I'm trying to get a feel for how old and tired my tranny is. The car has 104,000 miles now and I'm concerned that a tranny job isn't too far off now. I'd really like to baby this car as much as I can but when my foot touches that pedal... well... you know.
So how long did your original stock tranny last (Or has lasted so far)? Please go into detail if you wish as far as tranny model, mods, or any tips in extending it's life. Thanks!

my 88 iroc-z 5.7 had 110,00 before i wrecked it and that shifted fine and had no problems.
my 88 formula 350 i beat alot, and that starting slipping wot in overdrive, after that it started going down hill, when in overdrive and driving normal light to light the gears would start to stick alittle and i would have the start manually ****ing to get the gear i wanted. that was around the 115,000 mark, i think it was due to the fact the guy went to jiffy lube and had the tranny fluid changed, which might of not been a good thing if the tranny fluid was never changed before. anyway someone rear ended me so i didnt get a chance to see it blow up completely.
pretty soon i want to get some mods in my 700r4 like vette servo and trans go shift kit before it starts to want to go also.

mines goin on 168000 and has been working fine til i swapped heads, and it wont go outa frst now, but thats just some wierd thing that i must have screwed up on, other than that, its been driven quite hard since 89,000 miles and never slips at all, of course its got a shift kit installed that might be why its always worked great

I guess a good shift kit would be in order. Would y'all say that B&M is the most recommended one? And is it worth installing on a tranny that's already got tons of miles?

My trans has ~190K miles on it so I put 200,000-250,000 miles.
I put a B&M shift improver kit in it at about 160K miles IIRC. Haven't had any problems with it.
Granted, other than a few bolt-ons the engine is still stock, so it's not putting a huge load on the tranny. But still... I went from a 17.2 ET when I bought the car to a 16.5 this spring.
And I'm not easy on the car at all. It's a Camaro. You can't be easy on a Camaro. That's not why they made them.
You'll hear a lot of negative comments about the B&M kit here. Everyone swears by Trans-Go. I'm happy with my B&M, but based on what's been said here I'm one in a million.

the car had around 163,000 when Fragged my t-5. But then I killed it. It didn't die on it's own (although it proably would have liked to).

I now have an FLP Stage III trans w/Transgo Shift kit and 10" 2500 stall non-lockup converter. This trans launches HARD and shifts super crisp.

Dump the extra coil for the Transgo one.Don't forget too, your '84 trans and my '86 trans are from the "problem years". If your trans craps out on you, try to get an 87-up 700r4 from a junkyard. Among other longevity improvements, those '87 juiceboxes got an auxiliarly throttle body, and an improved fluid pump that prevent aeration (bubbles in fluid = no fluid to your clutches!).

I am the one with 250,000+ miles on a 700R4. That would be in my 84 K-5 Blazer that I bought brand new and still own. The tranny was performing just fine with a little whine in first gear. But I developed a leak at 260,000 that got just too much so I replaced with with a new GM unit. But let me say I am a conservative driver, and live in a rural area where you don't have to jump on the throttle and slam on the brakes all the time. (I also get 90,000 miles on my brakes). I would have left it alone except for the drip. I did service the tranny every 25,000 miles on that one.
My other 2 700R4's were both in cars I bought used and both were rebuilt just before I got them. So I have no idea how the previous owner treated them or drove them. Both have about 40,000 miles on them.

158K+, starting to shift alittle sluggishly at low throttle but still shifts quick and strong at WOT. I will probably only have it in for a few more thousand miles, i have a ProBuilt Street Strip tranny and ACT 2400 stall going in in a few months, hopefully.

191k on my NWC T5, took out the whole 3rd gear assembly and fragged the input shaft bearing thus ruining it. I put in a WC T5 ~1k ago and it's running fine so far. If this one goes (it eventually will) I'm getting a TKO or a TH400.

I have a 170,00 miles on my 700r4 with a midwest 3000 stall converter with a 383 in front of it. It is holding up very well. The only Mod I did was put a transgo kit in it about 5000 miles ago.....No slipping and very strong shifts

stock 700r4 - right at 200,000 miles, and still going. of course, i've only got a tbi 305 in front of it... but i still drive it as hard as it'll go.
i keep debating upgrading it some... but i always come back to my desire to get a t-56 (or richmond)... and of course, the lack of money for one as well. maybe someday i'll be able to install the t-56, but until then the miles just keep adding up on the ol' 700r4.

204,000+ MILES! The only thing that I have done is a B&M shift kit at about 185,000 miles. I thought for sure I would blow it with my Vortec 355 but it's still alive. The shift from 1-2 is still pretty good but not as snappy as it used to be. 2-3 is pretty sluggish at WOT and if I have it in 2nd then shift to DRIVE at WOT it won't even change to third untill I let off the thottle a little. That's gotta be worth a tenth or two right?
On my 700R4 transmission I am at 133,xxx miles. I have a 1991 305 carbed, stock tranny and rearend. The car is driven like a camaro should be driven, sweet roller just rollin the town and then when the need arises its rippin up the town and leavin a trail of dust. But ya my transmission has not gone out, does not really slip at all, but my overrun clutches (burnt), input sprag (broken), and overrun hub (broken) so In english terms that means I have no engine braking. Car is still very driveable but a little weird not having that working. Ya that shiznak just went out so other then that first gear is crappy and second has the power third gear is soso... and who cares what 4th does.

I fragged 1-3&5th at 150,000+ with 150shot on the stock 305 and about 700 miles and 6 runs(w/fresh et streets) on the new small block.

It grinds out downshifting to 4th and going into reverse from neutral... So I came up with a fancy trick
to downshift from 5 to 4: 5-3-4 and then let the clutch back out
to reverse : any gear/neutral-4-reverse
It's prolly getting ready to die on me

Well, I bought mine (I'm the third owner) with 162,000 original miles on the original transmission - 700R4- It still works fine in all four gears, but, I am going to rebuild the engine over the winter and I'm concerned with a bit more horsepower if the old trans will hold up. I am considering having it rebuilt now before anything weird goes on with it so it's ready for the new engine next year. The only local trans shop is AAMCO, so I'm crossing my fingers that they will do a good job. I'm thinking a TransGo kit and cooler with the rebuild.
Brad
PS- The other reason for a rebuild now is to keep it from leaking on my garage floor! Thought I had that car housebroken!

I don't know if I would take it to AAMCO, I've heard some pretty bad stories about them... If you're planning out putting out some decent power, you might want to get a hold of Dana from Pro-Built and see what he can do for you.

Hmm... thanks for the advice. Do you have any contact information for Dana and Pro-Built? Do they have a website? Thanks again! Brad

The website is pro-built.net, they have contact info on there. Dana really knows his stuff and puts out a high quality product, you won't be disappointed...

Thanks! I will drop an e-mail his way and see what he says. In checking out the site, the price seems a fair bit higher than other rebuilds, but according to what you are telling me, it just may be worth it in the long run. Thanks again and sorry for being off topic. Brad

200C behind an LG4 in an 83TA - tranny lasted 100K miles. It was abused a lot with downshifts to second from about 50 mph and so on.
Replaced with a TH350 done up to C spec - whoever rebuilt it at Toronto Transmissions did a schit job - had to be done again because the 1st converter had an imbalance but they wouldn't admit it until it f'cked everything else up and now the fluid is dark on the second rebuild after about 2000 miles.
