Not to seem overly confused here 1987gt, but haven't we seen this in two previous posts. The last post that I saw from you about a week ago said that you were waiting for payday so you could go to the dealer and pay $35.00 for a new key. What's up?The Trickster!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok 1987gta,
Here is what you can do on your own to resolve your problem. Go to radio shack or some other electronic shop that sells resistors. There are 15 different codes that GM uses in their V.A.T. systems. They are as follows, (1) 402, (2) 523, (3) 681, (4) 887, (5) 1130, (6) 1470, (7)1870, (8) 2370, (9) 3010, (10) 3740, (11) 4750, (12) 6040, (13) 7500, (14) 9530, (15) 11800. These resistance values are in OHM's. Buy a resistor with each of the OHM values that I listed above. disconnect the VATS harness from the ignition lock harness (it is a two wire harness and the wires should be colored blk/wht & ppl/yell. colors might vary a little, mine was orange and white) One at a time, jumper the harness going to the VATS control module with one of these resistors and use the key that the dealership cut for you to try and start the car. If the car starts with one of these resistors in place, make note of the resistance value and compare it to the list mentioned above. The dealership does not go by OHM resistance value when they code keys, but by the numbers 1 - 15 since that is the way it is listed in their machine. I know it is a long and drawn out procedure, but it is about the cheapest way I know of you finding the correct code value for your key by doing it yourself. After you find the correct value, you can get a key cut and coded at the dealership. Hope this helps.

Ok 1987gta,
When you say it is the wrong key and won't even go into the ignition, could you explain please! Do you mean that it won't engage the lock or that it won't go in the lock at all? If you mean that it won't engage the lock, that is because the standard key is about 3/8'" to 1/2" shorter than the VATS key. If that is the case explain to the dealer that your car has the VATS and that you need the longer key. If you mean that the key won't go into the lock at all, then I am out of Ideas.

Yes, what he will do is edit the VATS out of the computer chip. I can not tell you what to do with your car, but, personnally I would not disable the VATS. It might not seem like alot, but it does provide some measure of deterrent to someone who is wishing to drive off in your car without your permission. If the key that the dealer has made for you does not fit. Then take it back to him and explain the situation to him. I am sure he will be more than happy to work with you on it. I don't know who you have been dealing with there, but I have found that the parts department is more knowledgable in this area. (At least that has been my experience at my dealership).

Yes, replace the ignition lock cylinder with a standard one. Do what I mentioned earlier with the resistors. This will get you going. When and if you get the resistors, if radio shack does not have a resistor of the exact value I mentioned, get the value that is closest to it. Then if you feel like doing it, then you can replace the VATS cylinder with a new one. If your e-mail function works, I will send you some information I have on VATS.

1987gta,
I know you are frustrated and thoroughly ticked right now. So sit back, relax and read the e-mail I just sent you. Also, If you are of an age (no insult meant here) and so inclined, pop a couple of cold ones. I know I could use a few right about now. As a matter of fact, I think I see Captain Morgan sailing past my door. Cheers!!!

Go to the link below and download version 6.0 which is the newest version. I used Adobe Acrobat 6.0 to make the files.

Yes,
It will work, they will give you a key with it but it will not be a key with the pellet in it. This where the resistors I mentioned come in. Now don't get too upset or excited here about this. The information I sent you, shows you how to remove and replace the cylinder. As I mentioned earlier, once you get the resistance value using the resistors then you can have a key coded by the dealer. Otherwise you will have to have it towed to the dealership so they can put their tester on it and run thru the whole process. I don't know about your area, but around here the new cylinders run around $55.00 and the new keys run around $25.00. The coded key and cylinder are sold seperately.
