My dumba** failed emissions!! Need some insight please.

yup thats right my car sucked with hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, hey but i did pass the fuel cap pressure test

State standards:

Hydrocarbons 220 PPM
Carbon Monoxide 1.20 PCT

My test:

398 PPM
1.36 PCT

slp 1 3/4 headers non air, no smog pump, no cats, slp catback, i turned my fans off and was running 220 temp at least when being tested.

maybe having cats right now would be a good thing, any cheap methods to get me to pass?

thanks for your help.

I'd say just get cats, they don't hurt your performance THAT much.

Run the ignition a bit more advanced. I've heard that helps.

no try and get the car to run lean and retarded. thats what we did to my car to help pass. also find some Dry gas , comes in a little weird lookin blue bottle with a white top, dump like 5 bottles in or use a bottle of rubbing alcohol. burns clean as hell.

ok i am going to go to the nearest exhaust place and see if they will weld something up where i can remove them when i want. i will just get the cheapest most restrivitive ones to block the bad stuff, and i will just plug the air tube nipples because i dont have those anymore.

thanks for the suggestions everyone.

You can get away with a 2-way cat if thats all they test for. NOX testing would require a 3-way cat (air)

run your car at 220 and above for at least 20 mins. My car was wayyyyyyyy below the numbers they listed, and that was in NJ. Get some Catco 3 way with AIR. Mine was like 60 shipped from summit. Its way better and you can keep it on for later.

DO NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL......its NOT the same type of alcohol that is used as a fuel......

fuel alcohol is ethanol or methanol...methanol is more common in racing and thats what we use in the truck....

certain types of dry gas are based on the correct type of alcohol and should work.

Catco cats are the cheapest. A cutout is a good option. Summit Cats

ok just wanted to let everyone know that i passed.

things i did before i went again.

pulled the airbox, so basically run open throttle body
reset the computer
had a full tank of 93, last time it was only half full.
and it was alittle warmer this time.

this time they gave me the idle test and no roller, i asked why the guy said the person last time couldnt handle it and get the right readings

anyway they put my car in the computer as "idle only" so i just go in and put it in park and they test the exhaust for like 2 minutes or so.

glad i didnt go out and get cats and waste money.

the carbon monoxide levels read alot lower, but the hydrocarbons stayed alittle high i passed by being 1 number lower i call it close but i passed. hopefully next time i could maybe lower the fuel pressure and take timing out even more from stock.

I ran my car for about an hour and bought RXP, poured it in the tank, and passed. This was after I failed the first time around.
