Drum to Disc Swap, Need Info

Drum to Disc Swap, Need Info
Do the axels differ on a drum and disc rear end? Is the rear end housing different? Can I take the disc calipers and brakets and bolt them on my drum rear end? Any info on this would be nice. Its a '91 Camaro RS that Im wanting to do this on. Thanks

After searching I think what I want/need to do is get the rear calipers, Ebrake cables, brakets and rotors from a '93-'97 fbody, am i headed in the right direction or not? When I searched there was a lot of conflicting info.

Maybe if someone can help answer my question along these lines it might help the first guy out too.
For my app, I probably don't necessarily "need" rear discs, however I agree from an appearance point of view they do look better with rims that make it easy to see the brakes.
My '89 IROC has rear drums that I'd like to drop economically for rear discs. One thought that came to mind was switching them to non-1LE rear discs - is this possible with out too much fabrication? If possible, what year donor cars should I consider??Actually, is there such a thing as non-1LE rear discs - I can't say I even know the answer to that either - newbies........ ;-)

Nope- the same kit wont work on both. The axle flanges are different on the stock disc axle compared to the stock drum axle. I am 100% positive on that statement. And am talking 10 bolt disc to 10 bolt drum comparison.

You can find 98-02 rears for about $300 and if you need it a free posi and 3.42 gears. just make sure you have 28 spline axles for the 98-02 posi.

JerryWho, are you saying that I can get a '98+ rear end and swap it in my '91RS? I would like to do this, now I don't have a posi. You think I can find a '98+ complete with brakes for $300. And this is a bolt in?

It seems that I'm going to just have to get 4th gen brakes and cut on the rear end tubes on the axel ive got now, Is this hard?

You can modify your drum rear flanges to accept the disc backing plates, all you need is a Sawzall or a hacksaw. There's 2-4 LS1 rear brake setups on Ebay right now along with a few rearends, or go to www.tacreationsusa.com and buy just the brakes from those guys, nice price for the whole setup. Personally, I'd just swap the whole rear for about the same amount of money and get a better gear ratio..

try that out. you can get that setup from tacreation and modify your packing plates as shown in the tech article, IMO the ls1 rears are a lot nicer setup, this is how i'm gonna do it(once i get my new wheels).
