Stock LG4's
For those with stock LG4 engines, thats the 305 V8 with a carb w/2 wires going to it. Not the TBI or TPI.
How often do you have to go to a TEST ONLY station for your smog.
Doing some research here.

Still researching, but it appears that no matter what body style, if the car has a LG4 CARB is requiring TEST ONLY stations every smog check.
Keep the data coming. I am trying to accumilate enough data to claim vehicle profiling without regard to the individual vehicle's previous test results.
Were your cars test results higher or lower than average.

I think it's due more to the age of the car, than it's engine combo. My '88 350 TPI is required to go to a Test Only station. My last 2 smog checks were that way and the one I need to do this year is the same. I've resigned myself to the fact that will be the standard requirement from here on out.
It doesn't bother me so much. I have a good shop I take it to and they can't tinker with the car.
My '85 was TPI originally, and I had to take it to a "Test Only" center in 2000. It passed, and in 2002 it was "station of my choice". We'll see what I get next spring. My numbers were very low in 2000, and slightly above the average in 2002.
Both tests with headers, 217/225 cam, AFR heads, SR, 3.5" Mufflex, but all smog equipment intact.

My '83 T/A (carbed 305) has always required Test Only for the past 3 years I have owned it...But then again that goes for all my families cars, I think when they see our address on there computer it sends up a big red Test Only flag
Since they started the dyno testing, my 20th TTA has been a "test only" check every two years!
When I complained about it, they (the State Of California) informed me that there were not enough cars (20th TTAs) sold in California, for them to make a standard form of figures for them to go against.
That's one reason why I'm leaving this state! For me, it is always more $$$ at the test only stations!
It does seem strange for the other cars to be checked that way. At least, by the reasons that California gave me!
Hope this helps,
George

Well look at my profile. I had to go to a Test Only station in Sept. 2003 and it passed with flying colors. My vehicle I.D. shows my car is a LG4. Remember, I'd swap everything out to make it a TPI car.
My 1985 LG4 has been going to a test-only station for at least the last three smog checks.
Are you getting at the fact that certain older cars are supposed to be "randomly" chosen to go to a test-only station? That's what I heard. When I asked one of the inspectors why I was "randomly" chosen every single time, he laughed. There is nothing "random" about it.

Parrydice?
My point exactly.
Every 2 years since 1998 my spare GP is required to test only station and the emissions are below average. And i know two people with El Caminos that are in the same boat.
Of our 6 smog required cars only this one has to be test only.
I am suprised at Brets as the TPI's are supposed to be the cleanest of all.
I don't pay more at the test only, it is extra time, hours, as there isn't one around here and I won't take it and leave it like I do at my regular smog check station.
Don, do you know of a decent test only around here, as I go to one in Cypress, I don't like the one near the santa ana DMV.
I guess George has the right idea, leave the juristiction of the Calif CARB gestapo.

The answer is "GREED".
A few years ago my business, ironically due to Calif Environmental Laws, became very lucrative, so I have elected to sweat it out for a couple more years, maybe.
Past considerations have been Ariz or Nev. But probably go further east.
I am sure where you are the Ariz smogs laws are pretty lax, but I know areas like Phoenix are as bad as here. And the idioticy spreads like it did here.
According to the SEMA bulletion I got today Northern Kentucky is actually dismantaling it's smog test program.
We will miss you at the xmas dinner sat.
