Should I not be?
Heres a play by play on what I did.
1. remove motor
2. remove all other parts that easily unbolt
3. detach harness 90% and leave it hang free
4. soak remaining parts in bay and all painted surfaces with a very liberal amount of Castrol Superclean, rinse
5. repeat soaking but now brush down with hard plastic brush, rinse
6. repeat soaking but now rub everything down with a very abrasive scotchbrite pad, rinse
7. allow to dry, then rub all painted surfaces down with steel wool, use compressed air to blow clean
8. remove k-memeber, a-arms, steering linkage, and any other hard metal parts
9. sandblast all hard metal parts and then coat with POR-15
10. rattle can enigne bay with 2 0r 3 coats of automotive grade spray paint.
11. reinstall coated hard parts
12. hand detail all other parts that were removed with motor, paint as needed
13. snadblast all accessory brackets and strut mounts, then coat with POR-15
14. in my case I was installing a fresh motor that was fully detailed on the engine stand prior to install
15. replace as many other parts as possible: alternator, alluminum h2o pump, new AC compressr, coolant tank, etc...
16. hand polish intake parts: the Superram for me
17. hand polish all AC lines
18. soak all old bolts and fastners in a couple gallons of gas for a couple days
19. reassemble all removed parts with a bunch of TLC
20. add choice dress up parts to tie it all together
I think thats most of the process at least, hope that helps.
Getting an engine bay to look like that takes far more then a weekends time.

Holy cr@p.
Ominous, that is one heck of a car. Love the Telstars with the black paint. That reminds me of the Formy that Toby Hess built.
I have been toying with the color for my Formula's repaint (currently "GM Express-Peel Maui Blue") and your ride adds another color to the possibilities. The engine bay is amazing. Talk about a job well done!
Peace,
K

Love the Telstars
Since he put his Z28 into the rear end of a Saturn I decided to put the rims and tires to good use.
My billet 17"s and 275/40/ZRs are stacked up in the garage, they dont hook worth a **** anyway, but the drag radials aint that much better anyway, oh well.

True, the medium/darker greys are nice. My problem is that I had another of my cars in grey primer for a year and now when I see a grey car I think "primer" since there's no metalflake. Having just painted my first car (in a driveway booth, in the dustiest place in California), there is no way I want to fool with metallic paint. I was happy to have good results with simple white! heh
I have a F0rd 4.6 GT wing for the Bird (bolts right up, cheap as a newspaper) but that will be body color. If I found one of the original Firebird wings in that black rubber-esque material (at an Earthly price) I would jump on it. I agree, the black wing is a good contrast to the gray paint.
I still look at the black car above and drool

However I feel that black needs to be the color of the interior as well.
I also like my "limo tinted" black windows.
HHHHMMMMMM........Do we see a pettern here?
Lastly the engine bay in my opinion is also best in black. It really forces the effect of dress-up and polished parts. Any polished parts or brightly painted colors are really set-off with a black backdrop.
Once you go black you never go back!

This car has the grey/black gut, which should work well. It will be an easier job to repaint once the new house is ready (3 car with a drivethrough to the slab for rolling the car out for outside sanding).
I ran the gunmetal idea past my fiancee last night, and of course now we BOTH don't have a definite color in mind. Thansk a lot folks
Peace,
K

If I ever did repaint my Camaro, it'd be metallic blue w/ double-wide white racing stripes. I think 1st and 3rd gens look friggin' sweet like that!

Dude those rears look good with about 1.5 inches less gap than ours do with the 275/50/15's. Are they 27's, or did you lower the rear, or both?

I noticed in the picture that you upper radiator hose are collapsed. Why not get one with the springs inside? Nice engine compartment and motor.

The system was opened and depressurized when semi-hot. Sat in garage for a bit and cooled. Then pulled out to wash for pics. Hose most likely collapsed as it wasnt pressurized when started and pulled around, t-stat never reopened as coolant was less than 180* at that point.
Thanks for the concern though, I know it looks gay.

oh ok so it was not low on coolant but you took that cap off then it lost presure but the fact still remains that when you are low on coolant your system builds vacum and starts to suck coolant out of your resavor, and if your resavor is empty then your hose's are sucked in even thow thats not what happend this time but thats what will hapen when you are in fact low on coolant like i have seen many times. Try it some time and you will see, it's pretty cool the way that it works.
